yeah...looks cool but i couldn't rationalize spending that much cash on something i know full well is going to be abused and scratched all over.  that's why i have a scorpion and just plaster it with stickers!

+1 on on that!

And cheaper helmets tend to have cheaper visors/hinges too.
I tend to rip those off/break them when I faceplant on asphalt for some reason...  ???

i hear ya...though in scorpion's defense my little exo-400 held up nicely in arkansas, and i slammed the side of my face/head down about as hard as i could ask for.  that was mostly what i remember...the road rushing up to my face, really fast.  and the visor/hinges held up...just scratched and scuffed to hell.  not bad for a shade over $100.  of course, this was also low-speed stuff...so maybe the more hardcore crashes you're going to really be appreciating the better brands.

helmet talk gives me a headache. i love my scorpion and know two people wearing one when they had accidents and both are none the worse for wear. heard GREAT things about some less expensive brands like gmax, z1r and xspeed.  i don't know if the theory of "you get what you pay for" applies right now in protection until snell or someone does a revamp and test some new helmets with stricter standards. having said that, the helmet we are seeing is very nice and i could easily be convinced (somedays) to trade my first born for it.

I love my Z1R
Light weight, visors aren't $80 like Shoei/Arai/etc. (even the mirrored ones!)...
I've impact tested them at many angles -OK!  [thumbsup]

And for a $150 helmet it has a removable liner
That's a BIG plus with Texas summers -being able to wash it out thoroughly.

I'm due for a new helmet and I'll probably buy another one.

This is a long but very interesting read.  As a result of this, Snell is going to change how it certifies its helmets going forward.  [coffee]

It was very interesting that some of the DOT only helmets did very well in the testing section towards the end.

BTW: Webspoke says that he didn't mean to start a helmet war...  He just thought the helmet was cool looking...  [bang]

I don't see a "war", just some discussion of various helmets designs and features.

The helmet above does look cool.  I also like the new Ducati one with the Desmodromic valvetrain on it too!

...always been a sucker for technical drawings
I liked the desmo-valve-sketch on the Monster "battleship" gas tanks too.
Somewhere I have a pic of one infront of AMS-D.

We have these "discussions" all the time at home too.

I am more of a tech person, I look at the testing, and pick the besting looking option from the brand/helmet selected (and it has to be on sale!).  So now I am now in a helmet that I refer to bass boat meets Evel Knievel.  Lots of stars, lots of color, lots of big flake metallic.  [puke]

Webspoke helmet choice is driven more by the appearance.  Still decent helmets and tech.

I do admit, his helmets look nicer and are typically less pricey, and probably are just as good as the ones that I pick based on all of the tech...

I guess we never will really know until it is too late; but I an pretty sure that any helmet is better than no helmet.   ;)

Some VERY cool tech for your reading pleasure...  (Webspoke found this one)
There is a video link in the article that is very dramatic. (Yes their marketing group is amazing, I must get me 10 of them)

I guess this is an official threadjack, can I legally do that if my hubby started the tread?  ???

Ok, so I will try to bring it back on topic...  Cool helmet, cool graphics, is it on sale yet?   :P

woah.  :D

Very tempted here. It's actually $327 when you add to cart.

Do any motorcycle shops around here stock Suomy?  I'd like to try before I buy.  I'm not that impressed with my Arai.

Pretty sure MotoLiberty carries Suomy.  I know AMS/Dallas does.

Seeing crash results from some of the less expensive helmets is interesting. I guess the big name helmets aren't the only way to go now. I crashed a really nice new Shoei in a highside and the side of the helmet hit hard enough that it cracked each end of the chinbar where it meets the rest of the helmet. I think the shell compressed enough to cause that, because there were no marks on the chinbar. I know helmets are supposed to be pretty sacrificial but that kind of failure surprised me.
