         Ive done about 2000km's on my 06 monster in the two months ive owned it and have already had to top up the oil (when its level) and its starting to go down again, is this normal for these bikes to be using so much oil. It doesnt blow any smoke, doesnt smell of oil nor are there any leaks, is this normal? If not should i take it back to frasers at concord for warranty? Cheers.

  I can't say mine ever really used oil much. How much are you filling up?
Is your oil filter on tight? Don't really know but I'm sure you'd see if there is anything escaping out the bottom.

I've never had to top up my M800 either.. Sorry, I did have it one time, and it was exactly as matty said, the oil filter was not sealing properly. It was characterised by a regular burning smell whilst stopping, where my leak was dripping onto the hot header whilst stopped...

Hmmmm, if it aint burning it or leaking it, it could be high crankcase pressure (Leakage past rings, not seated yet of maybe glazed)  pushing the oil (vapour) through the breather system and into the airbox, and back through the engine again?? 

Pop the top off your airbox and remove the filter and see if there is any oil in there??

Back to using oil issues.

just checked the airbox and its free of any oil residue, checked around oil filter and crankcases but cant see any weeping. I think i might give it a oil change and new oil filter this week and take it for a good ride on the weekend and see if it drops down again. If so i might take it back to Fraser's.

Mine was leaking a little oil around the filter. Run a clean rag around it, take it for a run to warm it up, then when you come back and let it sit for 1/2 hour, make sure it's cool enough to touch but run your finger around your filter and see if you have any oil on your finger.

If you have, take it back to Frasers, if not, see first option.

No It's not normal for something only three years old unless it's got alot of Ks on the clock, the only way to properly check if it's burning any ( and it has to be the case if there are no leaks, it just doesn't evaporate in to thin air) is to have someone ride behind you and observe what happens on acceleration and decelleration.

Have a 6 month old S2R 800 with 7K on it & it hasn't used a drop of oil.

You say its covered by a warranty. My advice is to take it back to the dealer before the warranty expires to get the problem logged.

Once had a car with an oil problem but didn't report it until one month after warranty expiry - guess who paid for the repairs?

Niko, my 620 has 10,000 km on it, six years old, and has never used a drop of oil between changes. Take it back to get the issue logged within the warranty period. Cheers, ducsport.

Thanks for your help everyone, im taking it back to frasers (if they return my calls) in the next few days and hopefully i will get to the bottom of it.

before you take it anywhere you need to record how much oil it uses (quantity you topped it up with) over a certain number of km (preferably several hundred or more).  and be accurate with the numbers.  without that info you're wasting your time and theirs.

and be aware some manufacturers have fairly large limits for oil use.  you have to use more than a litre per thousand km before bmw consider it excessive.

Hmmmm, both "old" M750 and the DS dont need topping up at all between services!
