THE OLD MONK

ST. PATRICK’S DAY
St. Patrick’s Day is Tuesday, March 17th.  We will open at 11am this being the one day of the year that we serve lunch, and the full menu is available until 11pm.  Our regular menu has Irish favorites including Fish & Chips and Guinness Beef Stew plus we have a few traditional dishes such as a Corned Beef and Cabbage and Mashed Potato plate and Shepherds Pie. We’ll also have some less traditional items including an Irish Rueben with tender house cooked corned beef and a burger topped with melted Dubliner cheese and bacon.  Live music details will follow shortly.  There will be an Irish dancing display at 4pm.

Saturday, March 14th is the day of the Greenville Avenue parade.  The Monk will open early at 11am.  This is a really fun day at the Monk; an all day parade of green revelry.

NEW BEERS
We have reprinted our menu and have made some adjustments to the permanent beer list.  Hoegaarden is back on draught as is Kronenbourg.  We now have two rotator taps. One will be used for anything new, seasonal, or a possible old favorite while the second tap will be dedicated to Belgian beers.  Although we have five Belgian brews on draught permanently, this allows us to rotate in some of the recent arrivals such as Gulden Draak, Piraat, Leffe Blond, and also to revisit some of our Belgian favorites such as Maredsous 10, DeKoninck, or Triple Karmeliet.  The bottle list has also been expanded further to include Blanche de Bruxelles, La Chouffe, Mc Chouffe, St. Peter’s Cream Stout, Brooklyn Lager, Fireman’s #4, Old Chub, Stone IPA, and Gulden Draak.

NEW CHEESE
Two new cheeses are available as choices on the cheeseboards.  We now have a supplier for the Chimay beer cheese.  Like the beer, it is made by the Monks at the Abbey of Scourmount and the rind is washed in the Chimay Premier.  It is a natural pairing with many of our more complex, maltier beers, or a great robust cheese just by itself.  We have also added St. Andre Triple Cream.  This rich, buttery cheese was a favorite pairing with many beer styles at the Idle Rich’s beer tastings recently and is a great addition to the Monk’s menu.

TOP BEER BAR IN THE U.S.
The Old Monk made it onto Draft Magazine’s list of 200 best beer bars in the US.    The criteria included care in selection and handling of beer as well as atmosphere, food, and service.  NBC will present a short feature which will soon air on channel 5.
We are very proud of the award and would like to thank all our staff for embracing the passion we have for creating a brilliant pub. We’d especially like to thank Jake, who has been General Manager at the Monk for two years now and who obsesses over the details that make a pub great.

BRUNCH AND BURGERS
We have found a source for quality Irish sausages (bangers).  They are now available on the brunch menu (those of you who have stayed in Ireland, especially in a B&B, will undoubtedly have tried these before).  The brunch menu has been expanded to include a traditional benedict, a spinach benedict, and a smoked salmon & bagel plate.  There are also bottomless Mimosas to go alongside brunch priced Bloody Marys, Red Stellas, and Sangria (full menu on the web).

THE IDLE RICH PUB

TASTINGS
Thanks again to everyone who made these evenings so successful and such fun.  At the end of the last tasting, Hop Heaven, there was a lot of pressure to continue with additional tastings, so we have committed to a tasting of wheat beers to kick off the summer months.  We will email details in advance, but expect the tasting in early May, when we will feature German and American wheats and, perhaps, a Belgian white.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY
The Idle celebrates with a two day tent party.  On Saturday the 14th, we will have live traditional music indoors between 5pm and 8pm with Barley Mow and an Irish dancing display around 4:00pm.  Our full menu is available all day with such Irish favorites as Fish & Chips, Guinness Beef Pie, and an Irish Rueben with home cooked corned beef.  We open at 11am.
Tuesday, March 17th, the Idle again opens at 11am.  Entertainment with The Killdares (www.killdares.com) playing in the tent at 5:30pm and The King Bucks playing indoors at 8:30pm.  There will be an Irish dancing display at 7pm and a bagpiper on hand from 7pm-9:30pm.  Traditional fare will be available all day long from 11am-10pm including Corned Beef and Cabbage and Shepherds pie.

PHOTO SHOOT
The Idle was recently used in a photo shoot for an Amstel Light commercial.  Look for your local pub on a billboard in the near future as well as in Spin, Maxim and ESPN magazine sometime this summer.

IRISH SAUSAGES (BANGERS)
As mentioned under The Old Monk section, we have found a supply of quality bangers and they will be available on the brunch menu.  Also on brunch, the Idle has added a few new items, including a Floretine Benedict and House Smoked Salmon with Bagel.  We are also offering brunch drink specials and Bottomless Mimosas.  The full menu is on the web.

BLACKFRIAR PUB

ST. PATRICK’S DAY
Saturday, March 14th the Blackfriar will open from 11am-2am.  The parking lot will be closed off for additional space and outdoor bars.  We are expecting big crowds again this year at both Idle and Blackfriar and will have valet parking available at the red brick building just south of the Idle Rich plus paid self-parking one block south at the corner of Routh and McKinney.  Start the day with these drink specials from 11am to 2pm: $3 Red or White Sangria by the glass ($9 carafe), $3 Bloody Marys, $3 Red Stellas, and $14 Bottomless Mimosas

Tuesday, March 17th:  We will again be able to use the parking lot for additional space and outdoor bars and will have a tent if the weather requires it.  There will be live music by Hard Night’s Day on the porch at 6pm.  Shepherd’s Pie and Corned Beef and Cabbage will be available in addition to our regular menu.  There will also be an Irish dancing display at 7:30pm.

BRUNCH
Blackfriar began its brunch menu just two weeks ago (the menu is attached).  It features traditional breakfasts (bangers available), benedicts, plus some great breakfast tacos and a breakfast burrito.  Brunch drink specials are available including:  $3 Red or White Sangria by the glass ($9 by the carafe), $3 Red Stellas, $3 Bloody Marys, and $14 Bottomless Mimosas.

Thanks for your support.

A safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day to you all.

Arlington memories...

If I wasn't studying i was drunk.  This happened quite frequently at J. Gilligan's.  That place tends to get wild around this time of year.

I do not want to speak out of turn as this may be a local thing but who the hell is St. Patty?

This is Saint Patrick's Day the patron saint of Ireland, the short term is St. Paddy.  [drink]  [drink]

And as I'm sure you already know St George is the patron saint of England, St. George's day is 23rd April and to make it easy to remember when that is my mum decided to give birth to me on that day.

My bad! You are right Andy (bowing low  [bow_down]) Then again is very hard to get the Irish brough to come across in print. So, d'you think you could give me some lessons on how to anunciate properly in the British and Irish languages? As you know we 'staties' have a profound love of the accents across the Atlantic and to be PC I need some coaching on how to speak properly ok? Let's start by ME buying YOU some beers tomorrow at the pub and go from there ok?  [bow_down]

Um, yeah, Hillbilly Lizzy here...  I can see how the Irish get "Paddy" out of Patrick...

NOT!

Oh well, who cares!  The Irish still make great beer - that we get a special day just to savor it is all the better  [drink]  [laugh]
