Cored exhaust

It turns out that I will have to put off getting pipes to some indeterminate later date.

How do people go about coring their stock pipes?  Where do you take them, what should it cost?  Does it affect the way the bike runs at all?

I don't want to mess anything up?  I just want my bike to sound better until I can afford pipes in a year or so.

how to core an exhuast.... remove cans, chop saw  about 1/4 inch after the D on ducati, remove old end cap, pop the old endcap on, drill holes and pop new rivits on. its that simple. (well i omitted some not important parts).

doenst affect how the bike runs at all.

Yeah I didn't really understand that.  I'm pretty inept when it comes to stuff like this.

am I reading you right?  remove old end cap, then immediately place old end cap back on?  How do you get it back on, welding it I guess?

yea, theres a few ways to get the end cap off. the easiest way (which will shorten your can about an inch) is to just use a chop saw (large mechnical saw) with a metal cutting disc and just cut the end off. then you clean up the end cap, and you have to taper the end of the can so the end cap fits nice and smooth on it, then pop rivets in to hold it in place. if you dont know what rivets are, look at your chain. theres a pin that holds the chain links together, those are rivets.

alternatively, you can stick a dremel in there and cut the two bands holding that smaller inner end up, and something that required more work then needed...  ;D look around for a tutorial, the idea is the same for all bikes, if you intend on doing it yourself, mine are in the process of being "recored". aka i shortened them  a bit more and i can show you some pics of how i did mine.

I appreciate the advice.  just so you don't think I'm a total moron, I know what rivets and a chop saw are.  That being said, I probably wouldn't attempt this with out some help as I am a pretty clueless with this stuff.

well first things first, do you have a drill, a riveter ( they come cheap) with rivets and drillbit, a chop saw with a metal cutting disc, and a file? if you dont have a chop saw, id probably just pay someone to do it, its not a tool one would normally have/use for any reason other then contractors work. unless you are okay with doing it the dremel method, which is what kopfjager posted up. ( i dont like this method because i think the cans are too long to begin with especially with a tail chop).

edit: just looked at that thread again, he goes and chops the thing anyway (which is what i would suggest doing to begin with)

I used the dremel method to take out the end caps. I don't care for the stubby look.

I think it just takes more nerve than actual know how. I purchased an extra set of stock cans just in case I screwed something up. I also installed some perforated steel tube and exhaust packing, I didn't want an empty can sound.

The bike will sound better, but not by a hugh amount until you get rid of the Cat/udder. To ditch the Cat you will need a bypass header that will set you back a little over $400 new, but I'm sure you can find one used.  Just remember the S4R(S) or(T) comes with 45 mm pipes vs. the older S4R the came with 40mm pipes.

If the airbox is left stock the bike shouldn't run a whole lot leaner, but if a shop can increase fuel a little by making adjustments to the stock setup it would be beneficial - these things run lean as delivered.

If you were to take the Cat converter off, cut it in half right down the weld seam, hull it out and reweld it back together you would get the same thing for a lot less $$ and get a factory fit.

Exhaust Nirvana is attained with install of the full Termi kit though. ;D

I want a full termi system.  But the cheapest I've been able to find it is 2900 installed.  As I am a broke Graduate student.  I don't know when I will be able to afford that.

Kinda leaning towards BoomTubes at the moment.
