There is a guy on ebay offering to part out a 1996 600SS.

This bike was never imported to the USA and only about 1700 worldwide were made.  The 600ss was made for the European market which taxes bikes based on HP.  Two versions of the ZDM600S were made, a 53 hp and a 33hp (this is the 53hp).  From the factory, it is about 360lbs dry.  With mods, you can get it down to around 345 easily or less if you put nice wheels on it.

It was the LIGHTEST production bike Ducati ever made (production not race).

I emailed the guy and he wants ONLY 1800 to keep the bike together and sell it whole -- but it has NO TITLE (not a problem read below).

It needs a new clutch master, which is the same as the 900ss.

THis bike shares a lot of parts with the 900ss/750ss but the engine is different.  Here is some info about it.  Moto-One of Australia says it has the highest HP/cc of the ducatis of the era:

You can put Paso 750 heads on it (with some mods to the cylinders) and get big-valve performance out of it, which allows you to put FCR's on it with no problems.

There are only 2 or 3 of these bikes in the USA.  I have one.  I can't find the other.  This one was probably a grey market import, but it should not be a problem to get a legit title (about $250-300 max) from ITS.

Yes, this is a shame.  To me the only Ducs that should ever be parted out are those that are dead, but have a few functioning organs left.  A rare Duc, even more so.  If I had the loose cash and space, that bike would be mine in a heartbeat.

i have to sort of disagree.  the 600ss had a smaller swingarm which was prone to cracking under stress, but it is easily fixed or prevented (weld and gusset the rear), and the forks are smaller than the 900ss, so the triples have to be swapped to upgrade to nicer forks.

maybe if 50 hp is enough for you and you're 120 lbs... 

fyi the swingarm can easily be swapped out for a larger 900ss or aluminum one. 

they are fun little bikes.

I had no idea the 600SS was that rare.  My local dealer had one about three or four years ago, clean as could be.  It would make a nice stablemate to my 900SS SP.  Great bikes!
