Well it was bound to happen sooner or later.  I was heading up US 1 North to Raleigh when a State Trooper clocked me going 84 in a 65.  He got me with a laser...and I was the only vehicle on the road.

I have an out of state drivers license and a clean record.  Any idea what kind of ass pain I'm gonna get over this.  I have been doing a little research and it seems 15 over is the magic number...which I'm well over.

Any recommendations/advice?

Hmmm......84 in a 65 would put you at 19 over which is felony reckless driving in this state (damned fascists)

I would recommend an attorney. Spend the money to see if he can get the charges reduced, then put in for a "Prayer for Judgement" or PJC to have the penalty commuted unless you have another violation within the next 3 years. The downside is, you still pay court costs, and if you get cited again in the 3 year period they charge you with BOTH violations, so you gotta be good.

Since you have an out of state license, I do not believe that a PJC counts in state-to-state reciprocity, so NC won't notify your issuing state of the violation and your insurance won't go up. Worst case scenario is the Judge won't allow a PJC, but often if you get an attorney, they can knock the charges down and plea it out with the prosecutor so you avoid reciprocity as well.

Most of this post is right, however if you were not charged with Carelees and Reckless you have no felony...you cannot put  a felony on a NC state citation anyway. You would have to go in front of  a magistrate for any felony, and have  a1st apperance in court with in 24HRS.  and C&R at that speed is not  afelony. Get  alocal attourney in that area, have it reduced to PJC and watch the speed in NC...Good Luck!

or if you don't mind having a coupla points on your record just go to court by yourself and make the DA deal, 9 over, you pay court costs, around $140.

Sorry, I was thinking of something I read about 15 over in a 65 zone being felony reckless, but they would have to charge you with that. My bad.

I'm usually paranoid about that as well, so I rarely go more that 15 over the limit for any length of time. 10 over if I'm traveling out of the area on interstates.

9 over means no insurance points....they start at 10 over!!!  [bang]

I was coming back from a wrenching over at Daves house and got hit by a trooper on a bike doing 75 in a 55. They also got me squeezing in between 2 cars, that he had deemed to close...so i got a C&R... paid 300 bucks to a lawyer got a PJC, but the judge would not do anything about the C&R. Since I had a clean record at the time, it didn't really count against me... no hike in insurance, but another ticket and I get the 75 in a 55 plus what ever the current ticket will be... not good. So I have a few more months and been playing it safe... should play it safe all the time, not just when I have a clean record...  [bacon]

Well, I went the lawyer route.  Somehow this genius got the speeding ticket turned into a faulty equipment ticket (speedo) which carries no points.  I'm out $275 but didn't have to go to court on it.

I should have went to law school.
