These are the ones I'm shooting most lately, as they're what I find the most fun these days:

The top is a cheap .50 cal Spanish caplock that's a rough approximation of a Kentucky Long Rifle. I've played with a variety of hunting loads and patch thicknesses have gotten it to a point that it's quite accurate with a round ball to 100 yards.

The bottom is a .22 mag single action Ruger Super Six with nice antler grips. Fun and pretty inexpensive to shoot a bunch.

By hammer and hand all arts do stand.

I've heard that the paperwork process with registering handguns is a pain on the island. DRKWING or Teddy, any truth to this rumor I've heard?

Hey Trey, sorry it took so long for me to get around to answering this.  With you being active duty, and already owning the weapon, all you need to do is bring it down here with you (you can actually ship it in checked luggage as long as it is locked and declared at the terminal) and then register it with HPD within five days of arriving on island.  Do you know if you and the Mrs will be living on Schofield?  If so you will need to register it with the Provost Marshal's office as well.

That's precious.  Looks like he's gonna shoot his brains out.

any recommendations for a good marksmanship rifle in the $2k range? Looking for something with an effective range of at least 600 meters.

Stu, Mid 80s M1A built with GI parts.
With good ammo, read that as handloads not surplus crap,
I regularly shoot out to 600 yards with the open sights.

I regularly practice on an AQT targets which simulate a human silhouette out
to 400 yards, I usually score around 220 with my M1A and about 180 with my FAL

10 rounds Standing in 2 minutes - possible 50 points

10 rounds Standing to Seated in 50 seconds with a mag change (load 2 & 8 or if your rifle doesn't allow that load 5 & 5)
5 rounds per target - possible 50 points

10 rounds Standing to Prone in 60 seconds with a mag change (same as above)
3 on first target, 3 on second, and 4 on last - possible 50 points

10 rounds Slowfire Prone in 5 minutes. No mag change necessary
2 on first target, 2 on second, 3 on third, and 3 on last - Double the score on this stage for 100 possible points.

Total clean score would be 250 points.

Yep, a well tuned/shot M1A can be one hell of a tack-driver.

I learned how to shoot in the USMC- its the only thing I was actually good at (besides drinking beer). shot expert every time.
Joined the cub scouts with guns (national guard) and shot expert on their course- pop up dummies to 300/350 yards with no problem on the first try and had rounds left over. The timing was the tricky thing because the targets up close would go down faster than the ones at the back. But I got the hang of it.

what did you qualify expert with Stu?
m-16.
unfotunately they wouldnt let me qual with the .45 because I was an avionics tech on Harriers.
stuff I did get to shoot:
M-249 (sweet)
.50 cal
Mk-19
m-60
m-203 grenade launcher for the m-16.
at-4 didnt really count because it was a "practice round"
The night fire was probably the coolest thing. Listening to the Mk19's pop and then the explosion a few seconds later.

Well it's a bit more pop shooting the M80 ball over th 5.56.
I qualify expert with my M1A. Never tried it with a smaller caliber.
The M80 sure raises the dust when you're prone.
I have to say for distance and in close I can't beat my M1A.
Hunt for a deal is all I can say and you're better off buying an older 80's model
made with GI parts than purchasing a new rifle.
