There's an excellent example of why people should carry a small fire extinguisher with them. Alas, even my wife doesn't but it wouldn't do her much good anyway. She'd panic and run like most folks.  I've known three customers that noticed their cars had a gas odor when they were driving.  Each of them drove for about two weeks with the odor before the engines caught fire. One guy saw the smoke and pulled over onto the dirt shoulder. I asked him why he didn't open the hood and start throwing dirt on the flames. He said he was scared that it would blow up so instead he watched it burn into nothing for a half hour.
