For some reason I just can't seem to get a pair of boots that work.  Is there somewhere within a couplea hours of NYC with good prices and a WIDE selection?

The problem is no one carries much stock.  You can go to Camrods, Ducati NY and Goldcoast, to try boots on, but don't expect good prices.  Cliff's, Branchville and Rockwells, but they won't be cheap either unless they have something on sale.  You could hit Branchville and Cliff's in the same day.  I would also call first since they are all a bit of a haul.  Cheapest and probably the best inventory would be Cycle Gear in Edison, NJ.

If you want, you can bring your bike here and we can give adjusting your shift lever a shot.  No guarantee ;D

Thanks a million for the offer Howie, but I brought my Joe Rockets to ECS and I had Jay scratching his bald head about it.  He insists I need different boots.  I do not understand why, according to him, I'd need a longer shift lever to use those boots.  I have trouble justifying the expense of fancy new rearsets to use my $140 boots.  Still, perhaps a second set of eyes will help.  I'll PM you.

So I went to Cycle Gear in CT. for some boots.  This store is like every other bike store I've ever been to:  No sizes are in stock, nobody knows anything and the prices are not terrific.  I got me a SWEET pair of Dianese boots for $300.  I ask:
"how are these boots for ventilation?"
"Oh they're excellent!"
"too bad because I get cold really easily"
"these boots are really good for cold weather"
This guy was nice and he really tried to help, but he was a complete ignoramus.  Fortunately the one pair of boots that he had were nearly perfect.  I FINALLY can ride with you big dogs, just in time for the season to be over  [bang]
