ManOrAstro-Man?

Is it good to have so many helmets? The manufacturers recommend getting new helmets every 4 or 5 years right? Is this just a marketing scam?

You don't NEED a ton of helmets I've got a bunch for different reasons, the scorpion has had the shit crashed out of it, the arai is my fav and daily use, the other's just came along with ex's and such. I'm a moto courier and they all get a massive amount of use.

I have a good friend who works at arai and the 5 year thing is pretty stand up. Moisture in the polystyrene and UV on the shell take their toll. Helmet tech seems to make pretty big jumps in 5 years especially with snell 2010 coming up (new testing method that will make safer helmets) and it's going to require a lot of helmet manufactures to step up the game some of the smaller ones might not make it.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

My Bell Racestar from a few years back.  Great helmet but designed for use in cars...heavy with a relatively small eye port.  Used it for Formula Vee, karting, and Miata track events. Painted it myself...also painted several for other racing friends.  Now have a plain-jane jellow RF1000 that is getting dressed up with reflective graphics.

I was chopping up about 20 onions the other day in prep for a large Packers/Vikings game party.  Instead of weeping all over the place from the syn-propanethial-S-oxide vapors, I put on my Shoei RF-1100.  I don't care if I looked like an idiot, it did the job.

I've always used Scorpion Exo-700s, primarily because 90% of my riding is on the track and I can't afford to trash very many $500 helmets.  The Scorpions have done very well in protecting my head.  I have had 1 concussion but I flew about 12 feet in the air and came down squarely on the back of my head on the pavement and don't believe any helmet would have prevented it.  Coincidentally, that one concussion occured the first and only time I ever wore a Scorpion "Crackhead" helmet...   lol.  My only requirement for my Scorpions is that it must have some red in the scheme (nothing to do with Ducati).  I feel its worth mentioning when I got that concussion, that crackhead helmet was the first time I broke my color rule (it was white/grey) too... 

I wore the Raider for a long time but my most recent favorite is the Burst:

I have had several different brands but like Shoei the best...for me.  Here is one reason why...

50mph+21 year old dingbat+little red truck+curb= 3 screws in thumb, pretty gnarly road rash, and, oh yeah, not remembering 4 days...

Too bad they are discontinued.  I wanted a red/white Burst but couldnt find one in my size.  New Enough had them at $119 (may still, but sizing was limited).  I checked out the EXO700s at a local shop and the quality and finish impressed me.

i got the exo 700 and im very pleased with it, so far the no fog lens does not fog up. My friend with a Shoei X-11 has only the complaint the lens fogs even with a anti fog thing he put on it. And that is why i saved $450 and bought the exo 700.
It is the most bang for your buck helmet (or so i am told ..sucker born everyday)
