The Mysterious Subframe Question

I've had several people ask me about the subframe 'problem' on my bike. The mysterious subframe question has finally been figured out. The bike orignally was a biposto. It was made into a monoposto. It is supposed that the subframe on a biposto is set up for two people thus is also a little more flat on top for the 'other' rider. That would give it the appearance of being bent down (which it's not) I've had the frame looked at by several professionals who have all said the same thing. Next up may be a monoposto subframe.

I don't get it Red. I thought you said "it was made into a monoposto" but you ended the post by saying "next up may be a monoposto subframe". Did they not swap out the subframes when it was "made into a mono"? I remember when you were at the warehome at Scott's "going away" shindig and you, Lisa and others were fiddling with it. I did notice the weird angle on the tail end. Did they do something other than a subframe swap in the conversion? Just curious. [popcorn]

RED, are you thinking it could be single-seater bodywork on the original biposto frame?  That would be something to look into because I'm pretty sure the two subframes are different.

Ebay has subframes turn up for sale in the 999 parts-for-sale section fairly frequently.  It's hard to tell from pictures but maybe a visual comparison of the ones you see there could tell you more about the subframe you have on your bike.

it sounds like he has a monoposto tail/seat on a biposto subframe.
You can live to 100 if you give up all the things that make you want to live to 100.

Like Lisa suggested, maybe mono seat on a biposto subframe. I didn't know that would work but then again I haven't tried it nor do I know of anyone who has. Usually the conversion includes the mono subframe.

Nice find. [thumbsup] Red seat might look a little funny on his yellow 999. Then again, the red seat might make his yellow bike go faster. [laugh] Just saying. ;D

it is a Red Raider color after all.  :o

of course, being from Texas and all he could just spray paint it.

[laugh]  Dang those Red Raiders (is my burnt orange showing?  [evil]  Doomsday cometh:  September 19th, Texas Memorial Stadium.  I'm just sayin' ).

O.K., so much for that... Now back to our regularly scheduled Ducati programming:

Be extremely careful buying a used subframe for the 999 series bikes.  Small stress cracks along the weld lines are unfortunately quite common (don't ask me how I know).  You've almost got to see the subframe yourself, go over it with a very critical eye, before buying one.

My proposal for Ebay was only to help better identify visually a monoposto vs. biposto subframe.

Of course the cheapest, most efficient way to deal with this problem is to have all our extremely knowledgeable Ducati braintrust sit around and drink beer, eat pasta, deciding exactly what is you need  [evil]

Thursday, Urbino's?

If you find one with a crack in it for a cheap price I'll TIG it up for you (it'll only cost you a 6-pack of my choice)  ;)
(Lisa can vouch for me)

Absolutely, RichD rocks.  The welds you made to repair my aluminum subframe were better than the ones that came from the factory.  And if I could somehow get this friggin' laptop to post pix on here, I'd post a few of your work...

Damn fine job!  Thanks Rich [beer]

Exactly what I was thinking. And yes Brian you were right in that thinking. That is why said a mono subframe may be in the offing. That would fix it.

Don't forget I'm ex-Red Raider there D-man. hmm...spray paint...I like Brians suggestion that it would make me go faster. Hey what a thought...the fastest color made to go faster! Yeah, I like that.  [thumbsup]

Ok Ok, I'll have to concede this year is Texas University's year. Colt McCoy is going to take the Heisman and I think that University will actually play for a National Championship.
