Getting more sound out of stock cans on s2r 1K?

There's an interesting thread on one of the other forums about how to effectively increase volume on the stock Sport Classic cans by drilling a couple of well-placed holes -- http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=29317

I will eventually be upgrading to either an Arrow or Zard system (waiting for my bank account to agree with me on the necessity), but in the meantime I'd really like to get some more sound out of my stock set up.  The reason isn't just aural pleasure - I live in Los Angeles and split lanes fairly often, and with the stock cans no one hears me coming.  Definitely a safety issue.

From what I understand from the other thread, if you drill in the right places (on the GT 1000 cans), it creates a fourth "chamber" inside the pipes and significantly increases volume.  Has anyone tried something similar on a late-model Monster?  Thanks in advance for any info!

Don't think anyone has tried that method for monsters.  But from my quick look it'd be easy to try and if it doesn't get you waht you want you can do the traditional coring

Sounds like you are taking the 'loud pipes save lives' position here.  Don't kid yourself about that - it's been pretty thoroughly debunked, here and elsewhere.

By all means if you want a different sound that's fine, and there's nothing wrong even if it is just for purely aural pleasure.  But don't think it's going to have any bearing on your chances on the street.

I don't necessarily think loud pipes "save lives," but from personal experience riding my bike vs. a buddy's substantially louder Harley, I can absolutely assure you car drivers are more aware of you  with louder pipes than without.  It was a significant difference...and any little bit helps.

That being said, louder pipes are no substitute for smart, cautious riding (especially when lane splitting), and don't eliminate the inherent risks.

cool, fair enough, although I personally think any difference it makes is negligible at best.  I think we can agree though that the stock pipes are a bit too 'polite', and if nothing else need to be opened up some  [thumbsup]

There was a good thread on coring the cans on the other web site that you may want to check out.

It is an easy mod to do, I've had a lot of comments on how good it sounds, I followed the "ducati up north" method  (thanks dave) up to just past the part where you cut the end off of the inner can. I then cut as much of the longest pipe you see with a dremel and reassembled. Takes only a couple of hours.
Oh yes thanks to NAKID (Chris) for supplying the cans.

I would core the cans- but NOT for safety sake. I ride through L.A every day on either the Monster (S2R1K w/cored cans) or the 996 ( 54mm Arrows and loud as F**K). People hear me coming.. people see me comng. Some will be considerate and buy me some space. Others get pissed that I can lan split ( I assume), and crowd the center line.

Do it for the sound and always be heads up when you ride [thumbsup]
