Bought a CBR1000 for the wife last weekend and we did a nice 650km of riding which put my S4R just over the 12,000km service marker.

An unexpected ride is planned for this weekend, roughly 700km and i need the bike serviced before i go. I have my Ducati guy down the road doing everything but the oil change (the other crap is just checking bits, adjusting the chain) so i'll do it myself like i did on my old VTR.

1) What is the best oil to use? Brand?  Should i use 15-40?

2) I have a K&N oil filter but i forgot to check if it comes with a new gasket (i assume it does??). If not, where can i get one from?

I lost my bloody workshop manual for the bike otherwise i'd simply look it up  :'(

The oil change is standard fare!  [thumbsup]

Oil filter will have its rubber ring built in, so no probs there!  ;D

Ducati reckon that Shell is the oil to use. (There was a thread recently on here re oils and there costs)

remember to clean the pre filter, or strainer, it's behind the hex cover on the lhs case at the bottom. the outer cover is on tight so use an extension on an inhex socket to save skin! use the same inhex to undo the strainer as well. turn the washers over when re fitting and replace them next time. add some oil to the filter (don't fill it) and use old oil on the rubber o ring, don't over tighten. once you have filled it and it's in the oil sight windowm start it, let it idle for a minute or so then let it settle for 5 to 10 minutes, top it up midway between the low and hi line and you're done.

All done.

How many litres do you put in the S4R loony?

loony888

my owners manual says 3.4 litres for the 996 engine. that would be with a filter change.
did you find the screen ok?

All good cheers fellas!

The hex sump plug was annoying, snapped 1 of my Allen keys and had to go to bunnings to grab another set. Spewin they didn't have a hex set for wrenches otherwise no problem.

I bought a set of allen sockets on 3/8 drive from autobarn I think it cost about $60 but I use it on all hex bolts, no flexing and better control.
