The first 2/3 of that corner is pretty steep uphill, but it flattens off toward the exit.
Also, the camber/banking flattens off too.

That would explain it...  [thumbsup]

No...

But it is made out of rocks.

I think it's a participle... or some crap.

Dan - think Zeitgeist, then make it about 2x shabbier, about 10x worse smelling, and take away the beer and weed, and you have the Rock Store. Honestly, other than being on a nice twisty road it has about zero going for it.  Just a bend in the road really, to see and be seen.

Interesting that coming from the other direction, there is a 15 mph curve warning sign, but no sign from the direction in which all these crashes took place.

I guess they figured the right hander is tighter, so they put up the sign there.

There is a pretty long pretty steep downhill straight(ish) stretch leading into that corner.

I'm surprised no vids were of crashing that way, as it seems much more likely... and I've seen it happen.

I'm not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example!

Those vids get my inner gear-nazi all ready for a rant.  Why knee drag when you're wearing jeans?  And the short sleeves and the various riders in sneakers made me wince.

<stating the obvious>  It's pretty clear that the guys who crashed in those vids shouldn't trying to get through that turn as quickly as they were.  I saw lots of folks with a knee out and their butt off the seat, but with their head at centerline or even on the other side.  You can hang you knee out all you want, but if your upper body is pushing the bike underneath you, you're screwed.  The ZX-6 rider was the only one of those vids where he looked like he knew what he was doing.  And he didn't go splat.

Interesting about the camber.  That would explain a lot.  I couldn't tell if that's a portion of the turn where they'd be getting on the gas or not.  If they cracked the throttle a bit, I *think* there's a chance that some of them might have gotten through that one (I'm playing the physics out in my head because though cracking the throttle is counter-intuitive, but it would weight the rear more, which I *think* would help get more bite and prevent it from spinning up --right/wrong?).  Edit:  now that's starting to sound wrong.  Hmm.

Well, I think you're right about the throttle, but only enough to maintain the rearward weight bias, not so much as to break it loose. Thinking about it a little more, it's an uphill turn so keeping the weight on the rear isn't going to be an issue. I think they were just giving it too much gas coming out of the turn. Maybe hoping to do a wheelie or sumpin'.

You know how some people are about wheelies.  ;)

From the write up it sounds more like Alice's.
The Geist is a different sort of place completely.

I never even heard of the rock store before. That's in SOCAL isn't it? What country is SOCAL in again?

Alice's is like the 4 Seasons compared to the Rock Store.

Well, they re-did a bunch of the plumbing at the Rock Store, so the stench is gone.
My nose isn't all that discriminating, so YMMV.
