Yeah, the bag will expand upwards. You could fit an ice pack in easy. Or just fill the side pockets with ice too!
No paint scratches, the bottom of the bag is padded and has nice soft non-slip stuff on it.

Warning: If you try this at home, make sure you wait a while before opening your first beer.
Or you may have to wash said beer off your nice clean bike  :o

Nice to see you drink good Freo (WA) beer.  Had a friend who used to transport Guinness widget cans the same way and the trouble was you couldn't open them for hours otherwise you'd have to repaint the kitchen ceiling!  [cheeky] I find packing a bottle of whiskey negates the fizz problems.  :o

If you have a CAN that has been shaken to buggery and you want to open it, just do this. It works, I promise:
Using your thumb, push around the bottom rim of the can and put dents all the way around the BOTTOM edge of the can. Then proceed to open can as normal. Fun party trick.
You can shake the %$#@ out of the can and do this. It works a treat every time. Shocks the heck out of everyone too.
Cheers and I'm not really an alcoholic,
Kaz.
And no peoples, it won't work on glass bottles.  [roll]
