Even if diesel was $6/gallon, you would still be $5+ ahead in 100 miles.

I gotta get a friggin diesel!

the other thing to consider with diesel is the up front added cost of the engine. I know on my truck (new) it added over 5k to the purchase price. Thats ok, as long as you intend to keep the vehicle long enough to realize a true savings.

my diesel F250 is still pulling strong at 220,000 miles, although i am starting to have to replace some other bits and pieces for the second time now. in fact, i figured it out, and other than oil changes and tires, my 99 diesel truck has only cost me about 6k in maintenance and repairs since i bought it. that works for me.

gives NOGAS a new meaning ;)

Remember that "true savings" isn't "did I make my five grand back?" it's "did I make back more than if I stuck my $5k in a crappy money market account and compounded 6% interest over the life of the vehicle?" Go ahead and factor in inflation, the value of the dollar and purchasing power in there as well if you would like.

GAAN

hey don't lump me in with these people

I'm not the one trying to justify a vehicle as an investment

I may be simple

but

at least I identify a vehicle as an expense across the board

I can't recall how much more the Diesel Jetta was verse the gas. Also, I chose automatic over manual transmission, which cost more.

I think it was around 4k more.

This car will be driven for the life of it. I am not one to lease or flip flop on cars frequently. A car is a tool and means of transportation. It will be maintained by factory standards on maintenance until the repair cost exceeds the worth of the vehicle or it is truly time to purchase a new one.

I want to see how long the TDI will last. We have done all required maintenance, etc.

It is about 2k miles short of its 80k service.

I just dread the 100k as that is when the timing belts get changed = the entire engine is essentially pulled out = labor cost.

They also change the water pump while they are down there even if it is fine. That's fine with me, 100$ part which could go bad and then pay all that labor to get to it. Also, if it is in good shape, I will sell it on ebay or something.

Probably not worth much, but something is better than nothing.

I am hungry.

Engine is not pulled for the timing belt.  Alternator, ac, ps anb the accessory belt tensioner.  Replace the water pump isn't a big deal.  Just a lot of small steps.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

That is what the dealer told me in the service department, but maybe that was just his way of saying a lot of shit needs to come out.

Also, I suspect our motors are different.

The labor alone and the timing belts was quoted at $1000, making the entire service around $1500.

I found a local VW Mechanic who is actually an ex MAG (Midwest Auto Group) technician that opened his own shop. Very professional, follows everything to factory spec on maintenance, etc.

Therefore, I am taking the Jetta there for it's 80k service and beyond. Should be a lot cheaper as he charges his actual hours worked verse how long the stupid book says it should take.

I'll be the good test for longevity if I end up getting one as I'll pass Cyrus's mileage in just a bit over a year after getting it.
Timing belt change doesn't look absurdly hard so I'd probably cover that myself anyway too.
Basically my vehicles never see the dealership again unless it's warranty work or I drove it there to pick up a dealer only part. It's part saving money and part not trusting what I see and hear go on sometimes at these dealerships.
but then again NOGAS........so why has it actually become a conversation.

Sac I broke your NOGAS thread.  ;D

Diesels get higher resale value compared to gassers.  Spend the extra 3 or 4k.  You get it back when you sell.  Look at the sell prices of comparably equipped TDIs compared to the 1.8
