Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

Nice! One to one tie against UK. Sorry Andy! [laugh] [beer]

Brian, the US did not 'tie' with the UK they drew with England  [thumbsup]. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own teams but did not qualify.

A draw was the best result really, it gives you guys a chance to progress to the knockout stage. It would have been nice to win but no harm done.

Still feel sorry for that goalie. There is such a huge monkey on the back of every goalie, whether soccer or hockey. Talk about being under a magnifying glass!! Yeah, sure it's a team sport, but if you loose 1-0 everyone stares at the goalie thinking it's their fault. Again, glad for the "draw" and everyone moves on. [popcorn]

The keeper only gets grief when it is their fault. No one is blaming Howard for England's goal.

Green messed up and deserves all the abuse he is getting.

Green had a great one on one save later in the game and I get the distinct impression Green will get a few more chances to prove his mettle.

On a related soccer note: in a game I was watching yesterday, a player received a red card.  He had not been shown a yellow previously during the match; the ref just went straight to the red card.  What is the deal?

andym

Minor offences receive a yellow card and as you say 2 yellows make a red.

More serious offences, generally dangerous tackles will receive a straight red.  Cahill was unlucky, he tried to pull out of the tackle, he should have received a yellow not a red.

Will Cahill - or anyone who receives a straight red card - be out for the remainder of the matches or was it a one game suspension?

andym

2 match suspension which means he will probably not play again because Australia will be very lucky to progress.

Two more questions, please  ;D

"Set Pieces"?  I always thought there was just a single "set piece" and it was corner kicks.  What are the others?

And lastly, what is "Bottle"?  It was used by a... foreign  [laugh] announcer (McManaman) as a verb.

bryant8

A set piece is basically a designed play from a free kick that has an opportunity to put a shot on goal.  The shot could come directly from a free kick or from a cross to a striker looking for a first-touch opportunity.  Corners and free-kicks on the offensive side of the ball can have set pieces.

What Bryant said was right but all free kicks and corners are set pieces. If the ball is not in open play a set piece will bring it back into open play. Throw ins, goal kicks and penalty's are also 'technically' set pieces.

Bottle is like brave or courage.

You need a lot of bottle to ride a bike on the highway in Dallas.  [moto]

Makes sense. Doesn't bravery and courage often come in "bottled" form? For example "Hey, hold my beer and watch what I can do!" [drink] [bang] [laugh]

[laugh]  Awesome.  Gotta luv the English euphemisms.
