After-Market 999 exhaust... Will this fit my bike?

As many of you know, I've been on the hunt for a good after-market exhaust for my 2004 "base" model 999.  There are of course a bazillion manufacturers who make exhausts for the early generation 999 (2003 - 2004 bikes) but they also tend to cost a bazillion dollars...

So!  I've treed a set of used Remus cans that APPEAR to be compatible but I would like to know if anyone can for sure verify that this set will fit my early-gen 999:

As always, hugs, kisses and TIA,

Cher

I found this picture on ca-cycleworks site of a full system, looks like the cans stick out way past the tail

All the 999 exhausts stick out way past the tail on a monoposto model. They appear to fit more appropriately on the Biposto. Its the nature of the seat shape on Mono's.

Have you looked at LeoVance?  They sound incredible on that machine.

Yep, this lil' Q & A has been awesome; thanks for the replies  [thumbsup]

I think if my bike had the two-seater subframe, the Remus pipes would look OK.  Mine is a single-seat subframe though (which I inconveniently forgot to mention) so any after market pipes would stick out way too far.  I guess the OEM solution on the mono is not that bad...

Aside from the TOTALLY lame sound  [roll]

And just for the record from the CA Cycleworks website:

ZARD complete exhaust system (they do not make slip-ons):  $2,799.00

Leo Vince complete exhuast system (also no slip-ons available): $2,159.00

Staintune slip-ons:  $1,199.00

Unfortunately, my bike is worth about 8 grand so I see no point in spending a third of its overall value on an exhaust system that still would need a Power Commander or DP ECU to run properly.

Yeah and the problem only gets more complicated because I LOVE by bike.  I don't want to sell it because it does everything else I need it to do extremely well and with style.

I've talked to two seperate "car guys" about trying to cut the cat out of the lower mid pipe and both said they could try it but knew I would probably not be happy with the results; getting the pipe to marry up at both ends after a new section of pipe has been spliced-in to an area of critical bends would be next to impossible, plus the pipe would still have to flow well ... Big can of worms neither were too happy to try.

Hacking the cat out of the box muffler under the seat is done all the time.  That is definitely a job for a dremel and I've looked at doing that myself many times.  It's that second catalytic converter stuck down in the mid-pipe that's the killer.

Anyway, I'll keep at it on ebay and thanks for the replies!  I may just try and find a cheap mid pipe and see if I can dremel a "window" into the area of the cat and remove/grind smooth the interior of the pipe then find a good welder who could put the window  back in place.  That way the overall length and angels of the mid pipe will not have changed and should go right back in place.  That's the theory anyway   [laugh]

chew on a Spark full system. Price is much better at only 2k rather than the 3-4k for everybody else's full systems.

With the "leftover" money, you could look into a DP or Microtech or Nemesis ecu. I can get you a DP ecu separately if that's what you end up needing.

O.K. that is good to know.

On a related note; has anyone EVER heard of anyone being pleased with a Power Commander?  On any bike.  Doesn't have to be a Duc.  From what I can tell, nobody is ever 100% glad they went the PC route; never quite lived up to expectations or it wasn't enough to make a modded bike run 100% properly.  There's plenty of reputable shops around here that specialize in Power Commander tuning but it seems the results from using one are mixed, at best...

Absolutely no complaints on both version 3 and 5.  Love them both

with a dp/microtech/nemesis, you'll have one computer doing the job of controlling fueling, etc. Just like the system was designed for.

with a power commander, you'll have two computers trying to work together doing the job of controlling fueling, etc, where a single computer used to control the system.

therein seems to lie the problem on getting things "perfect".  A friend back home in Nashville has not been satisfied with the setup/maps for his RC51 after lots of tinkering.

of note, a guy came in the shop the other day asking about bazzaz. Unfortunately not available for the 999, it will be interesting to see if it can work better than the PC as a less expensive tuning alternative.
