Without getting into a lengthly refutation of Dr Jung's analysis ( ), I'd say the part where you had the opportunity to rip the guy off is now past.  It was an equitable deal - you got a free part, he got the satisfaction of accruing karma or just not having it take up physical or mental space in his life.   That's quid pro quo in my book.  Value does not necessarily mean cash, and if the value of the part to him was the sum of not having it in his garage and some amount of cash, I am sure he would have put a price tag on it.
If there is any ethical dilemma, it is whether you owe the guy something if you work out a cash deal with someone else.  If you really feel strongly about it, offer to split the proceeds with him, but future deals have nothing to do with past deals.  What if you won this in a contest?  Would selling it -even though you didn't exchange money for item- be unethical?  Nope.  Hell nope

actually i DO need that. I wanted to take my girl camping on my bike, I was going to buy a $30 pad and shave my passenger seat down and get a ventura rack so its high enough to hold 2 sleeping bags, a small tent, spare clothes and some food and give her room to rest her back on. My friend has the ventura rack, but its for DSS monster so i cant mount it due to my exhaust.... ive been looking at one on ducati.ms for a Multistrada but it just wont fit.. aside from that i have a tail chop to, so ive been thinking about making my own.

But i cant afford the ventura rack set up at over $300.....

PM me, im serious about buying it off you if it fits my bill....and maybe you want to help a brother out!!!

compensation for the guy you got it from is a non issue if you offered to pay originally, but he gave it away.

as far as "pay it forward".....only you can decide how/if you are going to live to that standard. each of us are different.
