So I've got some new 3-piece carbon fiber cam belt covers for the 999.  Once the side fairing is off, how much more of the motorcycle needs to be removed to get the front cam cover off/on?  Gas tank?  Intake runners?  Airbox?!?  Dammit, I'm gonna need a lot more beer  [laugh]

hey lisa, did you figure it out?  Are you just concerned about getting the front piece off?  I don't have a 999 in front of me but the front piece looks to be pretty accessible...

Hadn't gotten to it yet; all sorts of major house problems one right after the other these last two weeks.  My wrenching time has paid the price  :P

After looking at it more closely, putting the new cam belt covers on shouldn't be too bad.  It looks like once the vertical cover and small center section have been removed the horizontal belt cover should slide back and out with no issues.

Thanks for the replies.

+1 on house issues crowding wrenching time!

OK so I spent some quality time with the 999 before the track day on Monday.  While I had the fairings off I thought it would be a good time to fit the new CF covers.

2 hours later...

The cam belt covers are the vented kind and work only on an "R" or an '05 - '06 motor (mine's an '04).  Unfortunately, even after removing the intake runner and moving the tank out of the way, the vertical cover won't fit in the minute space between the cam box and trellis frame.  It is possible that by removing the entire airbox the cam belt cover might be worked into place but at this point I think minor dremel surgery on the vertical CF cover is the easiest answer - and of course the most fun  [laugh]

Now all I need to do is find a few spare hours between now and the hill country trip to get it done  [bang]

I'm pretty sure I've seen this issue, you have to cut a small triangular piece out if I remember correctly.  does that make any sense? I'm just going on memory at this point...

I think that's exactly what it's going to take; not all that much to trim once you get down to it but not what I was expecting.  Oh well, more fun with a Dremel  ;)
