Just click on the Paul Smart picture to the left.

I put mine under the seat on my S4R.....the guy who did the inspection said that you just have to present it when asked.  People place them in so many different places that you probably wont get pulled for it not being visible.  Anybody had problems with an under seat?

I've heard it has to be visible from the rear...

Wifely lawyer response coming. She's looking up the statute.  [thumbsup]

you're probably right, I'm new to TX laws.  My GSXR was on the front forks but that was a different state.
Remember though nothing is visible from the rear @ 150  ;D

Don't worry, IP... Someone will tell you where to stick it! [evil]

b.b.

I keep my sticker under the seat too. I'll worry about placement after my first warning/ticket.

I had mine on the back of the plate, but the Coppell LEO's hassled me twice about it saying it needed to be visible from 50ft.  :P

By law it needs to be "visible" from the rear of the vehicle. You're right, people put them everywhere on bikes... sounds like even under the seat. But it's going to depend on the officer that pulls you over and what you did to make him pull you over. :P Lisa/Norris' technique is nice and clean. I have an Evoluzione Sports 1000 tail clean up kit on my SC1000 and I took the sticker plate off and stuck in the under seat storage bin. When it's time for a new sticker I plan to put it on the right side swingarm behind the Termis. By the way, I have an extra Evoluzione tail kit brand new in the box. They stopped making them so it may be the last one on the planet that's not mounted on a bike. Interested?

The LEO on the Hill Country ride stopped me about my license plate location (warning).  Once he saw it, he was cool.  But he did comment on the location of the inspection sticker (blue).  I told him that the state licensed inspector chose the location - and if they said it was okay, who am I to argue.

The "registration sticker" (white), on the other hand... I'm not sure.  I've only ever seen it on the license plate where there's a place for it.

You can see both in this pic of my bike.

Ok, so a bit of confusion. For those who wanna know about the reg sticker.

"Texas Transportation Code - Subsection 502.180
Paragraph (h)  The registration insignia for validation of a license plate shall be attached to the rear license plate of the vehicle, if the vehicle is:
      (1)  a motorcycle
                (2) machinery used...."

So, according to the code it must merely be attached to the rear license plate of the vehicle. Which makes sense, as it fits in that little box on the top right.

What I was confused about was the INSPECTION sticker, as huge as it is. So, I called up TXDOT to ask the question. I could find no law dictating it. However there are regulations by which inspection stations must follow. You can be fined for not displaying the inspection by these regulations. They read:

"20.04 Certificate Mounting Procedures for Motorcycles, Motor-Driven Cycles, and Mopeds

1. On the Vehicle (Optional).  Punch the month of issuance and year of expiration.  Remove the certificate’s back paper and attach the certificate face up on the vehicle’s rear fender or any other visible location on the rear near its license plate.

Place the certificate in place and apply firmly.  OR

2. Backing Plate (Optional - to be furnished by cycle owner).  Punch the month of issuance and year of expiration.  Remove  the certificate’s back paper and attach the certificate face up on the backing plate which is mounted on the cycle near the license plate for this purpose.  Place the certificate in place and apply firmly.

3. Other Provisions - Motorcycles, Motor-Driven Cycles, and Mopeds.  Reject the vehicle if no fender or optional location is available for applying the inspection certificate."

If we go by the letter of the law:
1 - It's implied that the ENTIRE sticker (Sorry Lisa and Norris) must be visible. Why? Because it calls it a visible location. Technically, having part of it behind the plate is NOT a visible location. Also, under the seat DOES NOT comply.
2 - It does not say visible FROM the rear of the bike, only that it must be on the rear of the bike AND visible. So technically, if you wanted to split hairs, you could put it anywhere behind the very middle of the bike as long as someone looking at the bike can see it. There is no distance (such as 50ft.) and there is no direction (like from behind).

Here's the rub. If you got a ticket for it being on the frame on the side and you fought it, the judge would MOST LIKELY say that you know better and uphold the ticket. He/she could do this based on caselaw that I'm not aware of. But sometimes all it takes is a knowledge of the letter of the law to get around such things. You bring in the text from the link below, you might just get away with it.  [thumbsup]

Well, I got my answer. Hope I enlightened some other folks too.

Technically, it's not the law to be visible from the rear. Check out what I found in the above post.

As for the tail kit, possibly. Got pics? I'll do some googling.

Near the license plate, in any other visible location. Seems simple enough [thumbsup]
