Alright. I'm tired of searching. Where the heck can I get a good cheesesteak?

Well? What places have a proper sub? I give extra weight to people who actually should know a good one...like people from philly (duh), or the east coast in general.

i like jersey joe's in san carlos. they are very busy during lunch time...

Alice's ride then lunch at Jersey Joes is the only way to find out.

ABOUT - Originally from a small town North of Philadelphia, I thought owning an East Coast style sandwich shop was a great way to get back to my roots. Despite having lived in the San Francisco bay area for longer than I lived in Pennsylvania, my longing for good Cheesesteaks and Hoagies never seemed to fade. I’ve owned Jersey Joe’s since 2003 and from the start I knew what my mission was: Use high quality ingredients, do it right, have fun feeding the East Coast transplants and introducing new customers to a great sandwich.

SG, being a new englander there is this place in the city you need to try (if you like lobster and clams that is)  http://www.lobshack.com/   I have had a lobster roll there, but have yet to experiance a real one from the NE.

Here's some good recommendations:

I go to the Cheese Steak Shop on University Ave. in Berkeley. They have very authentic Cheesesteaks, and even fly the bread in from Philly.
They are part of a small chain with stores in SF, Berkeley, Pleasanton and Walnut Creek.

I was born in Philly.

Although not from philly ... does regularly driving from North New Jersey (Bergen County) to Philly to have a cheese steak from either Geno's or Pat's for lunch count?

Like FogDuc, I go to the Cheese Steak Stop on University near San Pablo if I need a cheese steak fix.

Bruchi's in Yakima, WA is decent too... but I think that's a bit far from here.   :)

No way, that place is bunk!  They put carrot and bell peppers in their chowder.  For a great lobster roll and fried ipswich clams you have to go to yankee pier.  www.yankeepier.com (I have nothing to gain by you dining at yankee pier.  This is an unsolicited testimonial. ;)  but it really does blow the lobster shack away)

No one in this area makes real cheesesteaks like in Philly.  Metro Caffe in the lower haight makes acceptable ones, but the real ones in Philly are a different story altogether.

I am from Boston.

I remember their chowder being mediocre at best, but I will have to give your place a try.  Which is the best of the 4 YPs?

No... You don't have any bias ... not at all.   [laugh]

So here's some unsolicited ... unbiased testimonial ... Yankee Pier is a great place, everyone whom I've taken there have enjoyed it.  I highly recommend the fish and chips ... very light and tasty.  I've also had the lobster roll and fried ipswitch sandwich there as well and those are really good.

The Yankee Pier in Lafayette is our newest one.  It opened this past February.  Right now it is the best of the four.  Let me know if you intend on going - I'll make sure they take good care of you.

http://www.cheesesteakshop.com/   - On Divis between Bush & Sutter, pretty damn good, it's no Pat's but they do a good job, the rolls are good & the cheese is gooey.  They do it right.

FYI - get a card, and they give you stamps everytime you buy,  Tuesday's are "Two Stamp Tuesdays"
