So sorry.

1) why the fire? and

2) you should've let it burn. That dry chemical smell? It's a permanent mod, I'm afraid.

I was taking the tank off.

My method for draining the gas in the tank is to pull the delivery hose, put another hose on it (that's the hose hanging down on the ground in the first pic), put the other end of the hose in a gas can, and cycle the key on-off-on-off-on-off until the fuel pump skeets all of the gas into the can.

Well, my battery was dead, so getting the fuel pump to function meant hooking up jumper cables.

Too bad I didn't check to see what position the key was in prior to hooking up the cables.

The key was in the on position and touching the second cable resulted in sparks.   [roll]

So in short, you're right Napoleon, I'm an idiot.   :P

One good thing that come from this..you were smart enough to HAVE a fire extinguisher on hand and it didn't burn more or blow up on you!!

Well, the first thing I did was run the gas can back a good distance.

Second was to yank the cables and back my truck up.

Then I searched for the fire extinguisher in my garage, which took a while to find, and put it out.

Then the fire re-ignited and I used to rest of the extinguisher's charge to no avail.

Meanwhile I'd remembered that there was another extinguisher on the exterior wall of the building (in the background of the second pic).

It took all of that one to get it put out the second time.  (And just barely.)

The damage is actually worse than I was able to capture with my camera phone.  There's plenty of melted shit and whatnot.

We'll see what my insurance company says.   :-\

D*mn!!  It took both of those to put it out?!   :o

That was burning good then..YIKES!

Well, you're lucky that it was just the bike.  It could have been much worse.

Good thinking though on your part to get the gas can out of there.

You get burned at all?
