Don't blame the 870 on some goofy corporate/legal counselor decisions. It's a poor innocent shotgun who has no vote in the board room. [laugh] I like the 500/590 series 'bergs too. You can't go wrong with either shotgun. I actually can load faster with the 500s since they have a nice big open well on the bottom of the receiver with nothing in the way. The 870s have a spring loaded shell carrier that extends from the trigger plate assembly and blocks the well of the receiver. You must push the spring loaded shell carrier up and out of the way with your shell before pushing it forward into the magazine tube. No big deal once you get the hang of it but it's nice not having that extra move on the Mossbergs. [thumbsup]

I've seen guys in classes screw up the Rem load and end up with double feeds in the receiver. The newer 870s have a cut in the extended shell carrier that allows you clear a double feed without field stripping the gun. Easier to show than explain in a post.

There is an article about the Rem 700 "issue" and the TV coverage of it in the new NRA American Rifleman. Now, if I can just figure out where junior put it! [bang] Little fart runs off with every American Rifleman and Bass Pro/Cabellas catalog before I ever get to turn a page! >:(

So in other words he takes after pa?

I have nothing against the 870, I'm just not sure how I feel about supporting remington.

I always kinda wanted a 700 as well

Just watched CNBC's report on the Remington 700 safety not working correctly.

Ho-lee-crap!!

I've been lusting over an 870 pump but im not sure I feel right about supporting Remington anymore. :(

Mossberg 500 persuader looking better and better.

Just read hte NRA article with the list of frauds that CNBC has perpetuated over guns.  Every time they can, they latch onto a gun issue and show it in the worst possible light with all the fraud possible.

They did a story on "assault weapons" and kept saying how "powerful" they were, without any shooting professionals commenting on the various calibers vs other guns.  Further, they kept showing FULLY AUTO versions which had nothing at all to do with the issue.  Pure fraud.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I get that its the media. Grain of salt taken but it doesn't seem remington has done much to take care of the problem.

Where would I go for the whole truth?

I heard if you make a tinfoil cover for your 700 it makes the safety work right ;D

Forget the safety, all foil is going towards my 10 gal cowboy hat. This is TX and Area 51 is not that far away. No orbiting aliens gonna be messing with my head with that tinfoil cowboy hat on! ;D Although the voices in my head do seem to be snoring. [bang]

500 is a great sg but the tube is not expandable.  590 has expansion cap as does rem 870.

You can't increase the magazine capacity beyond the stock capacity. It's fixed on the 500 Mossbergs. The Rem 870 for instance has a threaded cap on the end of the magazine tube. You can remove the cap and screw on extensions that make the magazine tube longer. Meaning it can hold more ammunition. The longer extension tubes come with a longer magazine spring to compensate for the extra length. They come in 1, 2, 3+ round extensions. You could theoretically have the mag tube sticking out several inches beyond the muzzle. Actually that's a pretty common practice in tactical shotgun competition or 3 gun matches.

I think the 500 breacher has the threaded cap on the mag tube.  Though it does seam to be the only 500 model with it.  It only comes in a pistol grip though and has the take it or leave it breacher barrel.

Yeah, the 500 "special purpose" models seem to have an open-ended mag like the 590, or maybe it is just that they offer the model with different sized magazines (based on their website, Ican't tell).

I don't see the purpose in offering both 500 and 590 in similar setups.  Unless the 590 has better components overall.  I know the regular 500 has a plastic trigger guard, maybe the 590s have only metal?

Yessir. The 590s have an all metal trigger group.
