The cost of ammo cured my want for a .45.  Ill stick to my 9's for now and practice twice as much.

The cost of ammo seems to be getting a little better, but unfortunately commodities seem poised to sky rocket again over the next couple of years. Reloading is starting to look better and better, not to mention .22's  ;D

Ive got a Ceiner .22 conversion kit for my Glock 17.  Not a single ftf so far.  Money well spent.

I recently ordered a tokorev upper for my AR.  7.62x25 ammo is running around 7-9 c per round these days.  It isn't as powerful as 5.56 or 7.62x39, but it hits very hard out of a 10" barrel (AR pistol).

The kit runs about $1000 for the upper, mag well adapter and converted magazines.  They have a very good rep, and I need something to shoot all this Tok ammo I bought.

It would be awesome if someone could make a Glock conversion for tok ammo.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

the 22 upper conversion is a great idea, but it's a huge step down in ballistics.

the tokarev setup isn't a confversion, you have to use a totally separate upper and barrel.

makes a good pistol caliber version.  if you've ever used a 9mm AR you'll understand what I mean.

5.56 nato, SS109:
62 gr SS109 FMJBT    3,100 ft/s    1,303 ft·lbf

Tokarev (Romanian load):
85 gr FMJ    1,720 ft/s    560 ft·lbf

9mm (typical)
140 gr FMJ    1,000 ft/s    309 ft·lbf

22LR (typical 40gr)
40 gr     1,080 ft/s     104 ft·lbf

It hits with a lot less energy than a 5.56 round, but almost 90% harder than a typical 9mm round.

Took the 1911 shooting yesterday and it liked the Russian Tula brand ammo well enough. May buy a bunch of that for the .45 just for range shooting. I was a bit concerned as I'd heard whispers here and there of it being shoddy, and people finding squibs in it, but it worked well enough for me.

And amen to needing a .22 something-or-another...

Used to shoot a Makarov a lot, but 9x18 has gotten just about as expensive as anything else. :-\

Considering picking up a CZ-52 and using it as my range plinking pistol, given how cheap 7.62x25 is (right now).

CZ 70's are a bit cheaper right now.

Also, you might consider a 9mm. The price of 32/7.65 and 9mm are pretty much the same.

I'm thinking about a new AR upper.
5.45x39 or 7.62x39?  Colt and S&W make them.  Is there an obvious forerunner?

I still like looking at the stacks of cases of Norinco ammo I have. ;D Cheap as hell Y2K purchases that run in everything I have. I've bought plenty of "name brand" since but when it comes to massive plink and practice outings I still bust out the non-corrosive Chinese junk. And to think my ex-wife used to think I was crazy for buying all those cases of ammo from Michael Tinney. [bang] [laugh] During the recent ammo shortage I could have bought a new 1098R from the profits made from selling my stash. But I'd rather still have the ammo! [thumbsup]

7.62 is really cheap right now

The key words there are "needing it"
Again if your life might depend on it then spend the extra, but if you are buying for casual plinking, which is what I thought he wanted, then save the cash. For plinking, I'd rather buy a $600 AR15 and maybe have to replace a trigger part oo front sight for $50 than spend $1000 on a decent AR, or $2000 for a top of the line gun.

Also think of resale. You won't get shit for a DPMS Pos, but if you were selling a Colt, Les Baer, etc. you would get some
of your money back.

I've sold a few pistols, since I mainly only keep them for personal protection or curiosities.  They are tools.  But rifles?  I have sold one in my lifetime and I still regret it.  I don't think I'll ever sell any more longarms.

As long as we are on AR uppers any one have any experiance with the 5.7 x 28 uppers?  I know the rounds not dirt cheap to shoot, mainly because there are no manufactures for it, but I allready have the Five seveN pistol and have been thinking of getting a rifle to go along with it.  The AR57 upper is alot cheaper than a PS90 and in my opinion better looking.
