Any misgivings I may have had disappeared as soon as I shot the damn thing.  Holy sheepshaggers, this thing is incredibly accurate.  By far, the most accurate pistol I own.  And the trigger is awesome.  Well, in single action, anyway.

That's not exactly what I meant by not being able to afford it.  I had the cash but now my 848 fund is significantly lower.

How much difference does the compensator make?

Having shot it with and without, it is a world of difference.  Depending on the load it has 50% less jump.  Not so much less recoil but it keeps everything level.  I found the lighter and faster the rounds are the more it works.
Just like a Duc.... [laugh]

They are really special wheel guns. If you ever had the chance to shoot a Python that has been slicked up it would re-define butter for you. [laugh]

I have slicked up J, K/L and N framed S&W revolvers which are incredibly nice guns!! [thumbsup] But my Pythons are in a class by them selves. Just my personal opinion that really doesn't mean shit to others but it does to me. Twenty bucks says some Ruger wheel gun guys can say the same thing... actually I have a couple of Weigand SP-101 Rugers that kick ass!!! [thumbsup] Seriuosly, they are really nice.

What's always really cool is having a gun (wheel gun, auto pistol, rifle, lever action, etc.) that has issues and have a good smithy work it over and fix the issues and make it one of your favorites. I really think that is why folks that are into guns are also into scooters. It's a very similar world. [moto]

OK, more pics!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Use the panoramic mode

That thing is a mile long

Here's what I think it is...

It's a 1777 model Charleville or pattern flintlock smoothbore musket that was converted to percussion cap. There is a date stamp on the lock plate of 1851.

The barrel is 42" long which would make it a cavalry model. The oal length without the bayonet is just over 57". It is a 69 caliber.

If anyone has any insight as to how to identify the manufacturer I'm all ears. I've scoured the web and really can't come up with any definitive answer on how to identify it.

DP -- The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Assn. has a monthly column in their magazine Muzzle Blasts where folks send in photos & descriptions of the identifying marks of old guns. One of the nation's experts on antique arms gives her analysis of the piece and passes along any info she can find -- unfortunately, it doesn't appear that they put that column up online at http://www.nmlra.org/publication.asp. If you're interested, I could pass along info to the NMLRA and get back to you any answer they offer.

Thanks! I'll pm you about details.

I need to take it apart to be able to see the important markings as they're hidden by the stock. I'm a little nervous about that.  :P

The family story about the musket is it came over from Germany with GGF. This pattern was widely copied all over Europe and Russia, but I'm pretty sure it isn't Russian as there is no Imperial Eagle stamp anywhere it should appear.

All of the furniture on this one is steel which leads me to believe it's a pattern as opposed to a French musket. The confusing thing is the finger grooves behind the trigger guard.

That was one of the features of the 1777 model and wasn't usually copied on the patterns that I can find in any photos.

Nice one hdp! [thumbsup] I feel blessed to have my grandfather's Winchester model 12 in 12 gauge. I'd love to find out when it was made. Got its' "little sister" from Dad when he passed, a Win model 42. But that musket and the family history are really cool! Hope you and triangleforge get it figured out. Post up results if you do. Just to be clear, the musket belongs to T.

So I took the musket apart today and took some pics and new measurements after I saw something on the barrel. It's a 70 cal...and I think it's Russian despite what I thought before.

If you look at the markings on the barrel it looks like an Imperial Eagle is stamped along with some markings that don't look like English letters.

If you look at the pic of the inside of the lock along with some numbers there is a marking near the front above the spring that looks like a pick. That marking also appears on the barrel.

Anyway triangleforge has offered to submit the info to an expert on antique muskets to see if I can find out more about it.

Does it take 30 round magazines? [laugh] Went back to DP did you? Glad you relocated your humor! [thumbsup] I'd love to hear the story on this one. Post up what you guys (and the expert) turn up. [popcorn] Curious minds want to know.
