I'm visiting mid march and definitely want to go to a rugby game.  Any pointers to what would be a good match to get tickets to?

Rugby is most often refers to rugby union ... but there is also rugby league. Do you know which you were after?

EDIT: You may not care, but if you are a novice ... league may be easier to follow. Others, I am sure, will disagree.

I've also heard seppos* talk about "Aussie Rules Rugby" which is even more confusing.

In oz we have three (main) forms of oval ball football (or "footy").

Rugby League - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_league
Rugby Union - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_union
Australian ("Aussie") Rules Football  - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aussie_rules

Rugby League will be easy to pick up, watch just about ANY game in Sydney
Rugby Union can be tricky if you've not watched it before but a great chance for a drink - watch a Super's  game anywhere you can (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Super_Rugby_season)
Aussie Rules is commonly likened to Aerial Ping Pong - watch ANY game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

What dates are you here and when are you going to be in different towns? Might be able to help pick a game or two for you.
Cheers,
M

Hi. I’m Troy McClure. You may remember me from such self-help tapes as “Smoke Yourself Thin” and “Get Some Confidence, Stupid!”
NYTimes: "...highlights of his global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800-year-old demigod and a dildo collector."

Ruby League - go the Eels!  [thumbsup]
Rugby Union - watch Invictus with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman (contrary to popular belief it is not about Nelson Mandela but about Matt Damon's atrocious Afrikaans accent)  [cheeky]
(G)AFL is for ballet dancers and metrosexuals.

It all depends on where you are and the date you have available.
If you are in brisbane or sydney - NRL (Rugby League)
Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth - AFL (Australian Rules)
and if your desperate - Super 12 (Rugby Union)

From your other thread, I think Sydney is your likely destination. If your near the city, I recommend seeing a home game for either Tigers, Roosters, Eels, or Rabbitohs game (best atmosphere).  IMO best atmosphere is Tigers at Leichhardt Oval, small suburban ground and the most exciting team in the comp!
Go here for the draw -> http://www.nrl.com/telstrapremiership/2011draw/tabid/10978/round/180/default.aspx

Let us know where you will be and the date, we will give you the match of the round.

Look,
If yagunna watch league you may as well watch the best team on the planet, and that would be St George Illawarra Dragons, won the minor premiership in 2009 then in 2010 did the double minor premiership AND major premiers.

                                          Mmick
This won't hurt much.... Trust me......

I wouldn't bother too much with a Dragons game.......not a lot of value for money i feel..........
On the other hand, Wests Tigers is the way to go.......an open flowing game is guaranteed....... [thumbsup]
A certain Dragons supporter is very one sided so take that reply with a grain of salt......... [popcorn]   [popcorn]   [popcorn]

Bahaha. So true.

And yes tigers are the way to go. Just think come end of year when the news comes to you that the WestsTigers have won the premiership you will be able to brag to your mates "Hey, thats the team we went and watched". Better yet if you can get to a game at Leichardt oval (one of their many home stadiums - dont get me started) you will also experience local footy at its finest - especially on the hill. Best hot dogs in Sydney and an atmosphere that is rivalled by none.

I like a drink. You know when people say 'I like a drink as much as the next man'? Not if I'm the next man, you don't.

But unfortunately the Mariners would have won the Grand Final by the time he arrives. Besides they have a relatively popular league in the US (the MLS), so it wouldn't be much of a novelty.

Unless he was able to catch a Sydney FC Asian Champions League game ... that could be a real novelty.

EDIT: Seeing those dates while I was typing he could possibly see the Football Grand Final depending on where it is held.
