I have an idea for a custom exhaust but I can't build it myself.  And I don't know if it's realistic. 



I'd like to do something kind of like the picture but I don't want it to be obnoxiously loud.  I was looking at some supposedly "quiet" Vance and Hines baffles that I might be able to fit.  Does anyone know if something resembling this is even possible while trying to keep it reasonably quiet?  If not I think I'm going to get GPR hi mounts.

Hey Sarge,
I'm afraid any exhaust that small is gonna be obnoxiously loud, baffles or no. Most here will disagree, but I think most if not all aftermarket straight through glass packs are also too loud, though the bigger cans have enough packing in them to at least take the obnoxious "edge" off that crack that straight pipes (ala Hardly) produce.

Ross is right. That will sound like a tractor. If you want a sample, just remove your cans and start it up. As he said, it's too small to baffle.

That's what I was affraid of.  Ducrider45 has a similar setup and I got my hopes up until he said that he's off the scale loud at 20 feet and 120+db at 40. 

Darn. 

OK, next question.  Is there a known good shop that I could talk to about building something else?  I have zero welding or metal working skillz or tools.  I'd like to do something different with my exhaust but don't really know what yet.  Any ideas?

I don't know of any shops that do that kind of stuff. They must be around, although I did meet with frustration trying to even find materials for my various exhaust projects... I ended up ordering supplies online from Stainless Works.

I have enough tools and welding skills to do "some" stuff, depends on how involved you want to get.

The problem is right now I have way too much on my plate. Moving, moving the shop, trying to put together 3 GasGas 250s, redo the exhaust on Whitey...  :bang   If you're not in a big hurry I could help you out, but it won't be for a good month or so I'm guessing.

Thanks for the offer Ross.  I'm not really in a hurry I'm just trying to get some ideas together.  I noticed that On-cycles put GPR hi mounts on clearance so I was thinking that if nothing else I'll pick those up.  I think those are too long for a bike with a tail chop though so I'll still have to do some finageling.  I vaguely remember a thread on TOB that said there was room to make some adjustments without cutting.  We'll see how it goes.  Thanks again for the help.

I got impatient and figured the deal was too good to pass up so I went ahead and ordered the GPR stainless hi mounts from On Cycles, $280 + $31 for three day shipping.  FYI, regular UPS ground shipping would have been free.  I may still need to make some adjustments for proper fitment, but hopefully with these, a K & N, and maybe a swiss cheese air box I'll be done with mods for a day or two.  I realized yesterday that I need to upgrade my suspension too.  It's way softer than I realized.  An Ohlins rear is not in the budget right now but hopefully I can get around to at least changing the front fork oil.  Who knows when that was last done, if ever.

Make yourself afford the Ohlins, really. I crashed the RC last year and used the insurance money to buy an Ohlins front fork and shock, the difference it made was amazing. The bike is so much more planted and drama free on the ripply roads out here in the alphabet.


Ps I finally figured out where everyone went.
2002 RC51 Sato exhaust, Power Commander, Ohlins suspension, Moriwaki rear shock link, stainless brake lines, 1/6th turn throttle, 42 tooth rear sprocket, OSF rearsets, road rashed fairings.
