Hello All;

I haven't owned a bike in many years and now want to buy a Monster, maybe a '05 - '07 S2R 800.  I have checked out some nice S2R 1000's.  Unfortunately, I am considered to be a first year rider and the difference in price for insurance is crazy.

I'm from Ontario, Canada and I'm hoping that the favorable currency exchange rates persist at least until I find my ride.

In the meanwhile, I continue to be on the steep slope of the learning curve.  Thanks for all the valuable information.

Welcome!  The S2R 800 has a much lighter clutch pull so there's one spot of advantage over the 1000:)

I suppose a person worried about insurance and lusting for 1000ccs could buy a M620 then wedge a DS1000 motor into it (I'm told they fit without too much trouble).   [roll]

2000 XR650R (dez racer)
2003 KX100 (wife's)
1994 DR250SE (wife's/my city commuter)

Thanks for the welcome!

I will be happy to get back on a bike.  I just wrote my M1 license today (and passed 8) so I'm getting closer to getting in the saddle.  Not so sure I'm interested in buying a bike then doing major surgery right away.  Interesting concept though re: the engine swap :)

I will get a year under my belt and then hopefully, will have some leverage to shop for better insurance rates next year.

I like the look of the single sided swing arm and high rise exhaust.  But if the right deal comes along for something else, I would give it a look too.

A 900 fits with even less issues.

Welcome - and there's plenty of good info on here, and helpful sorts to help you evaluate a bike should you find a listing that catches you eye. There's even a bieks for sale section - though most will be US bikes and the paperwork hassle might be not so much worth the hassle.

You might look around for a 620 or 695 if you're thinking of selling up to a larger displacement bike in a little bit of time. Though the 800 does have a good bump of power on the 6xx series - the suspension and brakes are the same. You don't get better suspension and brakes (from the factory) until the 1000
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

Re the paperwork, I just sold a bike last summer to a guy in Canada - he arranged most of the paperwork stuff.  All I had to do was send copies of various documents (don't remember what exactly - but all standard stuff, title, bill of sale etc) to the folks at the Canadian border so they'd let him through on his way back with the bike.  It all worked out well.  I think there are different rules based on age and IIRC the 1996 model bike I sold was only just old enough to qualify under the less restrictive method of import.  Anyway, all this to say you might be able to import from the US if you happen across a killer deal here.

MadDuc 20/20 just swung by my office on his S2R and it looked and sounded amazing - it was pretty heavily modified though I think.  The Penske shock was truly drool-worthy.

One more thing to consider is that the 6xx and S2R 800 all have the APTC clutch, which is very near to a slipper clutch, the 900/1000 doesn't. The ATPC will eat up a botched or just heavy handed downshift with aplomb making it an easier ride
