Was looking thru some photo's from a trip to Phillip Island in Jan and decided to post these up. I'd have to rate this as about the best days ride one could do in Australia, assuming you like thousands of very tight twisty corners thru spectacular mountain scenery.
Its about a 5 hr round trip starting for example at Mount Beauty you would take the Tawonga Gap rd over to the Great Alpine rd and head up thru Harrietville and Hotham to Omeo. Up to this point the road was in great condition and good signposting. From Omeo take the Omeo Hwy as it follows the Big River(great corners but very poor surface) up thru Anglers Rest till you turn left onto the Bogong High Plains rd.
Bogong H P rd is good new surface but is very narrow, no marking, centreline or signage and the road surface is white and so is the gravel, so its hard to tell where the edge is. If you meet any cars they will be in the middle of the road ie taking up most of it, so extreme caution is warranted.
I'd never seen Alpine Plains type high country in Aus before so I was really impressed with the stark remoteness of it all. Bogong High Plains rd will take you to Falls Creek and then down to Mt Beauty where you can turn left onto Tawonga Gap rd an  .  .  . do it all again !  Believe me, you will want to !

Yeah, don't ya hate having to ride roads like that all day, then turn around and doing it again, then stopping for the night in some little pub that can feed you and lock your bike up as well.

It shits me no-end, I'm just so glad that I'm one of the lucky ones that can join my fellow work mate and sit in traffic trying to make my way to work and then be privileged to hear the boss have is rant.

I don't know how you blokes put up with that shit on the open road.

On a lighter note, I like the second photo with the mirror showing where you've been, and the road ahead.

Yeah, that was a nice fluke which I didn't notice till I posted it up in the large size.

I remember fondly the Omeo road and riding the alpine country.
Must do it again this year and that new bit of the Bogong.

Just did all that and more last weekend and it is absolutely sensational.  [thumbsup] The only problems were the thick fog up the back of Falls Creek (I think that's the Bogong High Plains Rd) and the  [leo] who joined us in his SS commodore for the leg from Dinner Plain to Omeo.  Some of the best roads I've ever ridden.
Also did a run up along the Hume Reservoir and the upper Murray Through Tallangatta to Walwa and back.  Fantastic road to Walwa too.
We did five days all up with about 22 bikes and a couple of cars for back up.  Stayed two nights in Beechworth and two nights in Harrietville.  Top weekend.

Great pics!

Totally agree, did the trip back from P.I after the supers. We got absolute white out (cloud and rain) over Hotham but apart from that awesome. Mt Beauty for me was the best, reminded me of Maq Pass only longer and no cars.
