tachometer reading too low

When I start my 2002 M750 i.e. I get the cluster to light up, normal needle sweep on the speedometer, the tachometer does the same but only sweeps to about 8k RPMs (instead of 11K) and returns to what looks like it would be about -3000 rpms below 0.  From there, during normal operation will work fine except it reads too low.  Seems straight forward if I could just lift off the needle and put it back on turned about 30 degrees clockwise, but I don't know if that is the best option.

I tried manually rotating the needle, and it turned to rest at 0 and stayed there.  Started it with a fully normal needle sweep within the normal range.  Halfway through my ride this morning, it's back to the low (abnormal) position again.  Is there something I can adjust or remove and replace that would correct this?  Could it be a bad ground or is it something mechanical with the gauge itself?

Update to my OP:

I found a post from the UK monster forum describing how to take apart the face of the gauges; all I did was lift off the needle and replace it in the "correct" position. So far so good on my ride today.
