Elwyn Hall has some pretty fast feet and can sweep.

SHOTOKAN - Elwyn Hall Looks Back

Hell ya!  I got to do a seminar with him while living in England.  I trained Shotokan in the 90s but stopped after shodan...I'll get back to it but I'm working on my Judo BB at the moment.

You've seen it already.  Lyoto Machida does De ashi Barai all the time.  I did it while training Muay Thai and they hated it.  Sweeps and jabs can really get someone off their game.

Here's a good video of sweeps, and this guy is GOOD at them.

Shotokan Karate Ashi Barai (Foot Sweeps)

Been a victim in the 2 years I practiced Shotokan. Not fun.

That guy can move for being so rotund.

I've never been swept in a match, but I did fight a Brazilian guy that couldn't swept for shit. He pounded on both my lower legs, knees and thighs trying to swept, he just didn't have the technique. My legs looked like they had grapefruits under the skin for weeks.

He Man

man that guy has pretty cool sweeps. we have something VERY similar in muay thai. for a right handed person, you would use your foot to cath the calf and knee area and bring it foward while simultaneously push the left shoulder outward. It works best when they are going in for the clinch. the best example is at 3:47 from the video by bulldog2k. Thats exactly what we do. it works VERY well the first time you get someone. I had it done on me like 3 times while sparing, NOT FUN. lol

However that shotokan stance leaves you open for sweeps because you stand so much on one line. in other systems you stand on 2 lines and a front leg sweep normally will not work.

Incorrect. Again, look at Machida. The difference is that you have to use it as a counter or in the middle of your combination/technique.

I dont get what you mean.

If you stand on one line during a combo, you are not open to a sweep? or do you mean standing on one line as a basis for your fighting style does NOT open yourself for sweeps and you use machida as an example?

From the UFC machida fights ive seen the guy fights in a very different way than most other fighters. Successful? for his body type and his skill yes. Not sure if you can apply the same thing to other people.

I think you are both kinda right.

IMO - Feet in stance at hip with is ideal, for all systems.

A lot of people tend to get into a single plane kamae, probably to reduce target with, almost like a backstance traditionally done in one plane.

The positive of the traditional shotokan (many other systems) front stance is that enables you to cover a lot of distance and range. Read some of the critiques of Machida, his opponents generally commented that they had a hard time getting him into range, but he could still strike them. The negative is that the stance is much more difficult to react defensively.

In shotokan, there are a few different stances, but the forward stance is actually shoulder width apart.  Side stances (horse stance) and back stances are more in-line but you don't want to use it in a fight.  They are taught to help with movement and in a traditional sense, conditioning.  Stances are deep, but when fighting, it is higher up to be lighter on your feet, but at the same time you can lunge forward to attack.

When two Karatekas spar in a continuous fashion,  it starts to look like Kyokushin or even Muay Thai.  We were heavy with knees and elbows.   [evil]

Judo

Here's a nice quick Judo video.  I'm pretty sure it's a commercial for credit cards.

How many rounds? I found that jumping rope was the best way to get my cardio up. At my peak, I could jump rope for at least 30 minutes.

I am also height challenged, so you have to find a way to fight on the inside. Dirty boxing and clinch, but getting to that point is no fun, especially against a seasoned sparring partner. Against a n00b, I would be able to bob/weave/leg kick my way in. Once against the ropes, a lot of body shots to drop the hands and some hooks to the head to finish the job.
