this morning we discovered my brothers K9 GSXR stolen from the garage. they had to pass a communal "security" roller door, then cut a 15mm cable wrapped around a 20mm rhs door, then drag the bike against its bike lock and steering lock!

luckily, the scum dont like Ducatis! my monster was left untouched. it actually had the key in the seat lock stupid me.... also left untouched was all my carbon fibre parts that were left sitting there on a tarp in the garage!

also left untouched was my modified xs650! they didnt even lift the bike cover from it! and a brand new ipod docking stereo!?! i thought that would get taken to cashies for sure if someone broke in!

only thing i can think is they see Ducati and think exotic=hard to sell. as i said to my brother, if your after a quick buck, u dont know much about bikes and u see an "exotic", a classic, and a jap, i could assume the jap would look easier to sell parts off. its like if you see a old ferrari and a new toyota, for a quick buck you steal the toyota yeah? but little do they know a monster is uber common and much easier to sell parts from than a modern data dotted jap.

on the plus side, it was insured and my brother lost his license last week. he was thinking of selling but didnt wanna loose so much money on what appears to be a very bad market to sell a bike in. ironically i think the insurance "market value" will be much higher than he would have got with a private sale.

time to get more security for the monster....

looking into more security for my monster. has anyone here actually had their bike taken when it had a chain through the frame to a floor anchor? i hear of the relative uselessness of wheel locks all the time, it deters very little of the breed, and i understand anything can be cut or broken, but still anyone know of fhe of a big chain through the frame not stopping a theft?

Security?? Short of a bank vault deterence is mostly the only thing you can do. Although data dot is good and although it makes the vehicle less attractive because the parts can be traced it wont stop the theft!

Monitored security isnt a bad idea and isnt that expensive, and GPS based tracking devices are available also so the pricks can be tracked and found!?

Sorry to hear it mate.. I remember you saying that there were a fair number of thefts in your building... Might be worth looking at a cage?

Agree with Dragonworld... sounds like someone who needed parts, noticed your brother there or riding around locally and traced it back.

At the end of the day, nothing is going to stop people who REALLY want something.. A mate of mine living in inner city Sydney had four bikes chained to the floor and together with bike covers over the lot an had no probs, but then maybe people weren't determined enough.

keep the reciever in your bedroom and you know if anyone is in the garage

Sorry to hear about your brothers bike, although it doesn't sound all bad considering his situation. As for security, I'm not sure about floor locks and the like, but have you got an alarm? You can get some VERY loud motion sensitive alarms. I would think that would be a major deterrent for any would be criminal - so long as it's not easily disabled. Lots of disk locks on the market have inbuilt alarms. Chuck one on every rotor, and when you wake up to WW3 in your garage grab something solid and get ready for action...

as a few of you have mentioned, it is kinda convenient for him and i think that the cops/insurance know that! the day after it was stolen my brother received a text message from a random phone number asking if he wants to see his bike again. we kinda assumed a work mate or the like being dumb but no one has owned up to it!

talking to a coupla guys last night, it seems this isnt un heard of locally. a workmates brothers car was stolen a couple of months back and he had a similar message. they did some searching into it and it appears it was the police trying to bait him. cant talk of how they found this out but its interesting that this kinda thing may be happening. i dont think a reply text message will stand for much in court but i think depending on the response they may look further into it.

brother replied with something like, "nah mate im happy with the pay out, the police can deal with you tho"

and as for alarms, i brought a kick arse alarm about 6 months ago!! just didn't have it down there haha

this alarm i have is silly loud, runs motion and door sensor and also has a camera. when its set off it starts taking photos and it then messages the photos to your nominated mobile phone!! you can then call it back and talk to the person in the garage!

sounds kick arse huh? well i couldn't get the photo message part to work right. the alarm is VERY Chinese. it takes the photos alright and stores them on sd card but wouldn't send them. i did however manage to get it to send text only messages saying the sector that has been tripped, so im going to install that tonight sending text messages instead.

why didn't i do that before you ask? well i got a little dis enthused when i couldn't work it out and additionally my brother was dissing the alarm due to its extreme noise and inconvenience of having to carry an alarm dongle with him, stating that he will set it off ever time. so i stored it under the pool table. bad choice! haha

last night i also installed a floor anchor and a beefy chain which threads through the frame and front wheel! just to make sure they stand still long enough for me to get some good photos
