derbying...yay or nay?

I've been reading up on new posts, missions, etc. but haven't seen any comments/suggestions yet regarding posting of how-to-dos, mods, etc. that were useful in that other forum.  Any harm in posting things we've contributed before along those lines? Just curious if the intent it to start anew and let it build slowly or to somehow quickly rebuild out some of the more useful tips, instructions etc. that people put such effort and care into.

My 2 cents: if it's not already on the DMF, then it's not derbying. Simple. This is, in many ways, a clean slate. But, maybe a mod with a useful opinion should chime in first...

Some of us are also looking into creating a Wiki for monsters to help out with how-to's and such.

please re-post, TOB doesn't function properly so the search function is null. Bring the knowledge!

(I've written this without consulting the others, this is my personal view not "the official board view")

My opinion is that anything _you_ wrote you're perfectly entitled to derby anywhere you like, including here.

Wholesale cut-n-pasting of other people's posts from _any_ other forum is rude - even if you suspect the place you got it has no more copyright claim on it than you do.

Strip mining "the old place" and derbying verbatim is poor form, and I'd like to think we're better than that.

Writing new posts here drawing on knowledge archived there though is no different from when I posted stuff there that I'd read on other websites though - a fair few of my posts in the OEM part alternative thread were largely sourced from other ducati forums and websites, distilling that information one more time into here is no different to the way it ended up there in the first place. If you summarise large chunks of someone elses work, credit the original author if possible, or the place you found it if authorship isn't clear. Just think about how you'd feel if you were the original author and give credit and backlinks appropriately.

Writing new FAQs and HowTos here is great, I'd really like to discourage "ripping content off" from "the old place" - if you _really_ want something from there, see if you can contact the original author and get them to derby it here, or at least get permission from the for you to derby it first. Otherwise rewrite it yourself (or ask someone else here to write it up for you).

Thoughts?

Sounds like a good approach to me.  I had very few in depth posts of my own in TOB so I asked more our of curiosity than anything.  I stopped visiting TOB, and actually couldn't get the search to pull up any results anyhow, so I planned on making new posts here for what little I'd contributed to date.

Maybe it was just me, but when I tried searching for my own posts on TOB the other day I couldn't get past initial errors that said I had to use more than X number of characters for keywords, even though I did, etc. etc. and I just gave up.  Ah well. This appears to be an top notch new start so all is well.

I think there was some darn good write ups that took folks a lot of heart and soul to put together on the other site.  It would be a shame to lose those for any reason and quite honestly- looking in more than one place for that kind of thing is a royal PITA.  derby says I.

There is a lot of great info. As others said if you are the author of it post it here. I am mechanically challenged  :bang but thats because I really never had the opportunity to work on my own bike. I can use all the info I can get as I am sure others are as well.

Plus hopefully it will limit the number or questions people ask but as I have learned no matter how talented you are some people just can't figure out the SEARCH button  ;D

Yeah, okay. I change my two cents to exactly what bigiain said. Can I just copy and paste it into this space? J/K! Seriously, it makes sense. A forum doesn't take control of your creations just because you put it there. It's not like you're publishing it and the forum owners are the publishers. There's no copyright infringement going on, even if you copy and paste someone else's work. It's tacky though, and you know we have better form than that! So, I hope people will bring their knowledge and their posts from TOB to here.

I sure as hell intend to post up the few useful things I did here! I just put up the one about lowering headlights.
I posted them originally to help out and let others know how I did something, as far as I'm concerned its not the intelectual property of anyone seeking to profit from it and is mine to do with as I see fit. wt:

if you don't (re)post, then how are certain people's panties ever going to get stirred into a bunch?  It has to be done  ;D

So ask questions! I don't think there's a single part of my '99 M750 I haven't held in my hands and examined with great curiosity (errrmmm, I haven't actually opened up the oil pump, and I didn't take the conrods off so I haven't seen the big end bearings and I've only played with the crank and rods as a unit).

I'm not very good at knowing what other people are curious about or need reassurance before tackling.

I can't promise a great write up, but I will attempt to offer tips and advice where I can...

My panties are far too comfortable at the moment.  Where's a troll when you need one?  Or a derby?  Going to be long day for this grumpy old man.
