Press Release
Ducati Rider Portrait’s Photo Project
Bay Area Photographer Exposes the Soul of Ducati

251 W El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA 94087
Saturday July 16th 2011

Combine the words art and motorcycle in a conversation and the word Ducati is soon mentioned. The bay area is a paradise for motorcyclists and a sanctuary for artists, so an exhibition that combines the two is a genuine showcase of local passions. From July 2nd to July 30th the Sunnyvale Art Gallery will play host to over 40 select portraits from acclaimed photographer Wayne Serrano’s “Ducati Rider Portrait Project”. The exhibition also includes several sculptures of Italian two wheel horsepower, including a rare Ducati Desmosedici RR.

For decades Wayne Serrano has worked as an editorial and commercial photographer. His style has evolved to capturing the moments and emotions of real people in the environments that reflects their uniqueness and true spirit. “Looking over a few contact sheets of a motorcycle rider photo-shoot it struck me. After people ride, their faces are different; you can see it in their eyes. With that discovery the project began. When riding, the state of being hyper-focused is subconscious. A rider escapes into the moment and all other concerns and pretenses are pulled away. My goal was to capture that moment in the Ducati rider’s eyes.”

Often considered the Ferrari of motorcycles Ducati riders were a natural fit for the project. These Italian machines are always fast, and very sexy. As a photographer, Wayne quickly saw the Ducati difference. “Even people who don’t know anything about bikes are drawn to the beauty of a Ducati straight away. Some Ducati riders say it’s the only motorcycle with a soul. When people feel that way about a bike, a good photo isn’t far behind.”

Often done in a few fleeting seconds rather than extensive photo-shoots Wayne sought to capture that “rider face” before it was gone. It’s clear he’s succeeded. One gallery visitor Cat MacLeod said “We’ve all seen ourselves in the mirror but to see your own wild-eyed soul staring back at you bigger than life…that’s art.”
The 20X30” prints will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go to fund the continuation of the project and subsequent book.

A special artist reception will be held Saturday July 16th from 1pm to 11pm, with Wayne speaking at 5pm. The exhibition opening is timed to coincide with Red Bull US Grand Prix, when all the motorcycling world’s eyes turn the Bay Area’s own Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Many riders are stopping off at the Gallery as they head south to the races.

The Sunnyvale Art Gallery is open from 8am to 8pm Monday through Friday and 9am to 8pm Saturday. It is located at 251 W El Camino Real, Sunnyvale, CA 94087 (408) 737-8188

For those of you who could not make it to the Sunnyvale Art Gallery; The Ducati Rider Portraits video was taped July 16, 2011 during the Artist Reception at the Sunnyvale Art Gallery.  The video showcases subjects talking about the experience of being photographed and sharing reactions to being seen on ‘The Wall’ of Ducati Rider Portraits, larger than life. The Ducati Rider Portraits project continues to grow and I am looking forward to many portraits to follow.

Ciao,

Wayne
