yes correct...the rimmed round necessitated a magazine that was almost a full circular shape

Russians didn't have that problem, but then again I don't know that box magazines were invented at that point.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Should of hid them..

Long story, but I was not around to be involved and mom wasn't in a mood to deal with a store of guns (he had about 200 total)..  She had a guy from a gun shop inventory them.

Pop had progressively gone through each one and documented them in a folder, which they didn't find, apparently he had a lot of others that he had traded away or sold.  Someone somewhere has a bunch of fun pieces, albeit massively illegal.  Pop had no idea they were illegal though.  He brought them over and it never occurred to him to ask, I guess.  He didn't fire any of the war trophies to my knowledge, he just like shooting skeet.

I bet that happened a lot. Especially WWII and Korean vets. Maybe a few Viet Nam era AKs for good measure. Stuff it in your duffle or mail it home in pieces. I've heard stories (as most of you have) about German Lugers, Japanese swords, etc. making it home. Why wouldn't a few burp guns make it back too? I'd damn sure try just for the heck of it. ;D Remember, up until the 1934 NFA law was passed you could legally buy a Thompson machine gun at your local hardware store... along with a box of nails, some .45acp ammo and rat poison. Opps, sorry RAT. No offense. [laugh]

My uncle has a Smith Corona AND an IBM!

yes S-C, Remington and IBM all made typewriters...and rifles

which I suppose, in the greater world of writing utensils

did not support the notion that the "pen" is mightier than the sword

How did the range session go?

How did the range session go?

Curious minds want to know.

I shot a friend's 1903A3 several years ago and it was a damn good shooter. I'll never remember who the manufacturer was. I recall we were shooting ball reloads that he had worked up. It had me jonesin' for one for awhile but I fought it off. I only have two .30-06 rifles, a Garand and a Model 70 and I don't need another one. I know... blasphemy! [laugh]

How did the range session go?

Actually pretty well,,,,I managed 45 rounds down-range wearing a t-shirt for protection...

so my shoulder took a bit of a pounding

shot @ 100 yards at 6 inch shoot-n-see's from the bench on the bags

3 sight-ins and it was dialed into the black and stayed there

no clover leafing or sub-moa groups...about a 4 inch spread

Trigger feels like 2-3 lbs  not 1 1/2 so I am going to tweak the grub screw adjusters this week

always feels light enough until you're actually shouldering the rifle and staring down the barrel with a round chambered

only then do you really know if you have the pull where you want it

probably would have grouped better if I had a winter jacket on ....

after 12 rounds I was pulling my shots a little in anticipation of the punch

I've got a wickedly bad shoulder that needs a lot of surgical attention. Even long sessions with a .223 made me head for the Advil and flexible cold pack out of the freezer. I now keep a PAST slip on shoulder pad in one of my rifle/shotgun gear range bags. [thumbsup] It put a dent in Advil's profits last year! [laugh]

Glad the session went well. With some shoulder padding and a massaged trigger bet those groups shrink.

I have always liked the 03A3's more than the pre-WW2 versions...the aperture sight on the receiver bridge was always better than the ladder sight on the barrel...

the one I have has a Lyman 48 rear sight and a Globe front that takes inserts...I call them winter guns since they kick like mules and I always do better with them with a layer or 2 of outerwear on

Right now I am down to one WW2 Garand...I sold off 2 others to fund an LRB M14SA build....

I'll get another CMP beater Garand as a winter project...probably a post war....found a site on the web where they are selling new 1952 Springfield Garand barrels in cosmoline and wrapped so I'll build up another crack shooter

I do as well....old Colt AR from the late 70's and currently a lego-special I put together using an LRB lower, someone's flat top upper, RRA trigger and Armalite Barrel, bolt and carrier. Scoped that one with the Leupold Mark AR

I swear by the Armalite standard M15A2 barrels 1:9 twists and have used them for a few I assembled always with outstanding results

I have found that the best heads for .223 are the Sierra 60 grain hollow point varminters and damn near any type of powder behind the load...outshoots their match heads of any weight 7 days a week
