Here's some underwater GoPro footage. I've taken it down to 40m a couple of times now without any problems. They are actually rated to 60m!
I had the camera on a "head-mount", which is a mount on an elastic strap, like wearing a head-lamp.
Filmed in 1080p I think it came out pretty well. Although you can see it doesn't like low light too much when I go through the swim through (it just gets a little grainy)

Mr Meanie,

How well does the head mount work? Does it interfere with your mask? Does it need any adjustment during the dive? Is there any prep-work you need to do on the housing (greasing the "o-ring" for example)? Any other advice/feedback for in-water use?

It seems the wide angle lens does not allow a narrow torch beam to improve the lighting ... so shallow water seems the only feasible solution to the big blue.

Hi Betty,
The head mount is great, it has a strap that goes around your head and one that goes over the top too. It's quite wide and has sticky rubbery stuff on the inside to hold it in place. It doesn't interfere with my mask at all as it sits just above it. No adjustment necessary during the dive, but it is a good idea to get your buddy to check the viewing angle is right before you descend. I did a night dive with the camera pointing up too high. I only saw my torch beam once on the whole video...

The only prep work, is to obviously use the waterproof door, and make sure the o-ring is clean and dry. Any foreign material (grit, dust, hair) can compromise the seal. GoPro warn against using any grease etc.

Flat aftermarket lenses are available, which are apparently better for underwater use. I've scratched my lens, so I might pick up a flat one along with the standard replacement. The majority of that dive was between 30 - 40m, as long as the vis is good, there seems to be enough light.

Thanks mate, the footage looks awesome. I was asking about the o-ring because we (by we I mean she) used to apply a thin layer of silicone grease to the still camera ... and like you said GoPro discourage it - but they also won't warrant the watertightness.

It was the 60m rating that sold me (even though we haven't dived since the Boss' accident). After the feedback from the Ozmo gang I opted for the little brother 960 version as I didn't see myself recording at full definition anyway.

Just need to learn how to use it and how to edit videos. Bought mine from Monster Parts (couldn't resist while we were buying some other stuff) and Jeff went above and beyond.

I have found that mounting is the hardest bit. I am yet to find an acceptable mounting spot on my monster (but maybe I am being too picky). I am working on rigging something up so I will post up a photo if it works.

All I am after is a combination of good/ interesting view point, minimal vibration and good sound. Is that too much to ask?

I really think what you need Techno, is multiple mounting points. Keep changing them throughout the ride.
After all, no-one likes to watch a video shot solely from the one position ;)

I really like the shot from the camera mounted on the rear grab rail.
You can see the whole side of the bike, the road ahead, good lean angle, and my kevlar jeans flapping in the breeze really help with the sensation of speed.
Unfortunately my arse gets in the way when I lean off the bike.

Have you tried the suction cup off the side of the tank? It's nice and solid, and provides a good view too.

techno

I agree with the multiple shot selection. I have about 4 in mind which should break up the monotony if I edit them together. At the moment, the funs in the experimenting. But so is the frustration when you get back from a ride an realise you have nothing captured. Thats happened a few times already.  [bang]

I have the VIO POV, Very small camera head & easy to mount just about anywhere. The recording unit is a little bulky but the whole thing is waterproof without any housing, built in LCD & the extra features with a small cam with little wind resistance when its on your helmet is what won me over. The quality is great with the new POV.HD & 142 degree field of view at 1080p.

I shot this with my old POV1.5

I bought the ContourHD yesterday + the handlebar mount bracket which looks like it will also fit on too the M1100's frame without a problem. I'm justy not sure of the exact placement so will experiment with the alignment lasers a bit.

The weather looks good Saturday so I'll be going up around Red Hill to the 'Seat and so will capture a run or two for tweaking the camera settings as far as light, sound and video quality go. I'll post my results over the weekend.

that is what I borrowed from my mate.  You may want to put some thicker rubber as it may dampen some of the vibration - which is shown as waviness (such a word) from the engine harmonics - also mentioned earlier in this thread.  My frame sliders come out from the frame (sounds a bit obvious) so that is where I mounted the camera.  Took about 20 minutes with the laser alignment to get the result you see (as per video previous).  Make sure you have the laser dots a bit lower then the horizontal and you should get a good view.  There is now also a bluetooth connection which allows you to connect to your iPhone and preview the video to get better alignment!

I am still undecided whether to get the GoPro or Contour... [thumbsup]

Here's my vid from Saturday. It turned out pretty good really, I'm pleased with the camera and the quality of the capture. The audio is pretty good as well, it clearly captures the engine sounds and there is wind noise but its not completely over-powering. I got a bit carried away and put a soundtrack on it, which might upset the YT folk and get it pulled, I dunno, let's see. Turn your speakers and up and let rip.

Redhill and Arthur's Seat

I see what you mean about wavy line, it looks like a heat haze on the film but comes and goes as the revs (and vibration) reach certain harmonics I believe.

I recently bought a Go-Pro also. This was used on the Snow over the ditch......

I tried Helmet mounted as well as a "hand holder" that strapped via velcro around the glove. As mentioned earlier it has good a good resolution and easy to use but doesn't show the slope.

Looks like I cruised the flats all day.

I think this is one of those gadgets that keeps you coming back to buy the accessories.

Today I picked up the lcd screen and a top notch SD card as my last one failed just when I needed it.

I should be just about set now.
