Theft scare

So I'm out of town this weekend but I've got a fellow duc rider dropping by my place periodically to take care of my dog and keep an eye on the bike.  the bike is parked out side directly in front of my condo door.

So I get a call from my buddy saying the cover is missing, the bike is unlocked, and the immobilizer light is not blinking.  He tried to lock it but the key won't turn in the ignition.  So it's a pretty safe bet someone tried some shit.

I'm pretty concerned now about the ignition and possible damage to it (though there is none evident from the exterior).  It did in the past have occasional issues being sticky and not turning but it never lasted more than a minute or so.

so what does it mean if the immobilizer light has stopped?  did it get tripped or what?  I really hope I dont' have to haul it to the dealership when I get back  >:(

Immobilizer light only blinks for 24 hours, so if you have not ridden it in over 24 hours I wouldn't worry about it.  Second, the lock on my monster seems to be very stubborn and doesn't always turn when I try to lock it, was thinking it locks easier when I don't have the wheel turned so much but yesterday I couldn't get it locked no matter what so that is just annoying sometimes, but next time I try it will likely lock so whatever.  Regarding the cover, I don't have anything to say about that.  Are you sure you put in on before you left?  Good luck and I hope everything is safe when you get home.

thanks man appreciate the info and sentiments...

I was in a hurry when I left so I might concede that I forgot to lock it, but it definitely had the cover on....  so that missing is pretty fishy.

At my gym a guy had his used underwear stolen - THAT'S fishy. My point is that some people will steal anything just because they can. It doesn't have to mean they intended to steal your bike?

cover could have blown away unles you secure it with something.....

I bet it was gremlins tho.  they are nasty little bastrds

I hope you are just dealing with cover thieves and not bike theives, it'd be an easier fix.  Someone stole the seat from my cheap bicycle in college, so yes, people will steal anything...

Good luck!

Any kids live in your neighborhood?  Ditto on the ignition being sticky sometimes.  Helps me if wiggle the bars a little to relieve pressure.  It would take a pro to unlock the ignition without the key and leaving no external signs of tampering, and the bike would have been gone.  You likely, forgot to lock it.

The cover off is strange.   My $35 ebay cover has elastic to hug both wheels and an underbelly strap to synche it down.  I have pulled the covered bike on an exposed trailer at highway speeds, and it would sooner shred itself at the seems than come off.

Again, its kids or your friend Ferris Buellered it for a day.
M-ROCin' it!!!

When I had to cover my bike I would lock the cover to the front wheel using a D-shape krypton bicycle lock.  Someone could cut the cover off, but they're still have the darn krypton lock through the wheel.

Sure hope everything is OK...

When do you get home?

Hope things are not to bad when you get home.  I know the feeling of having shit stolen and it sucks.  Some people are just make the beast with two backsing assholes.  Good luck with things.

factorPlayer

Well I got in and of course the first thing I do is check out the bike.

It's pretty clear someone make the beast with two backsed with the ignition - it's screwed up now and the key won't seat properly  >:(

so it's off to the shop tuesday morning to probably have the ignition assembly replaced.  What sucks is the same thing happened w/ my 620 two years ago.  I wish there was some type locking cap you could put over the ignition or something, this really sucks.  well... could have been worse, and otherwise the bike is fine.  Still sucks though.

I may have to start hanging out in the gun thread now, I'm getting ideas.

somegirl

Sorry to hear that, that sucks.  >:( :( Good luck with the repair.  Will your insurance cover it?
