Can you run an aftermarket exhaust without an ECU on the 696/769? Or maybe do something to the ecu to make it compatible with the aftermarket slip ons (Termignoni, Arrow, MIVV, etc.)

As I understand it.  the only thing you will improve by adding slip-ons without the ECU, is the noise.  you will see none of the power gains you can realize with a new ECU, and your bike will probably run worse without it, as the air-fuel ratios are designed for the amount of back pressure  provided by the stock cans.

Regardless of the exhaust... I think you'll find the bike wont run at all without an ECU  .  But seriously.... plenty of folk are running slip-on cans with a stock ECU without any adverse effect.

Unger is correct.  I'm running zard slipons on my 1100s without an ecu upgrade and the bike runs fine,not optimal, but fine.  Having said that an ecu reflash will make it run better and I will be sending mine out soon.  But u will have no issues with just running the slipons except some popping on decel.

I ran slipons for a few thousand miles without a reflashed ecu. I have to say though, even though the reflash process was a major headache for me, having the reflashed ecu and air filt really woke the bike up. An additional bonus is that the bike starts easier too. I have a '10 696 btw.
