that's very interesting, but not surprising.  i assume it has to do with the pricing too, they probably can't make them cheaply enough to warrant it and since the later models were just sleeved-down 6xx cc models with a smaller crank, they actually were a tad heavy.

the old engine (right side clutch slave) was lighter and the 350/400 models were around 172kg, which was lighter across the board than the larger models.  the '96 600ss nuda was the lightest production bike Ducati made, at least according to Mr Falloon

We "had" them here in the US too. Until it was only 696/1100 and later 796

Not sure if that was a typo or not ... but it seems to be causing some confusion.

The Australian Monster line-up is currently:

796
1100

Yes, we also had the 695 in Australia too prior to the 'new-gen' release.

By way of explanation ... we have graduated licencing down here so while you have a learners permit or provisional licence you couldn't ride a Ducati - so they introduced the less powerful/restricted 659 (similarly a restricted 620 was previously available).

The main restrictions are power and capacity (until not that long ago you could only ride up to 250cc on your L's & P's) ... but it can be complicated and technical.

Oh ... and it usually takes about four years before you graduate to a full 'unrestricted' licence.

I'm still surprised they persist with the 696 down here though.

that picture of the Multi in grey doesn't look half bad....but, back to Monsters....so they'll have a 696 and then the 99 more CC's for who kows how much more, they'll have a 795...I guess instead of the 1100Evo?!?!?!

I seriously see the lineup in Asia as

696, 795, 1100 as I doubt they'll drop the 696 or keep the 796. since it seems the whole idea is lower ride height in their lineup.

kind of a letdown, but i guess it's good if you live in asia.

i guess i'll be seeing a lot more monsters when i stop by bkk next time.

still the Multi is so much taller, more open, more utilitarian and much less sport styling than the ST.
NOW, if Ducati really wanted to add the option of a hard bagged Diavel to the lineup then we'd be talking about a cool tourer with a touch of sportiness
