I was under the impression that today's superbikes (1098, 1198, 1199) have/had a lower MSRP than the bikes of yesteryear (916, 996, 998, 999, et al).

However, i can't find anything to back that up.  Can anyone support or refute my understanding, or point to me a resource that lists the original msrp?

thanks

I've heard this claim made, and I think it hinges on the price in terms of real value. That is, inflation must be taken into account. If we had a list of MSRPs through the years we could run them through one of those handy dandy inflation calculators and see for ourselves.

Without looking it up, I recall that this was definitely the case with the 2007 1098 because the guys who bought 2005/06 99 bikes were complaining that the new design was cheaper than what they paid for thier bikes. It was Ducati's promotional way of trying to get owners/potential owners from the other manufacturers to come over to the Red-Side. The prices went back up in 2008, but not as high as previous bikes.

Edit -
1995 916 - I can't seem to find a base price online
2002 998 - $17,695 (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/features/2002_ducati_998/index.html)
2005 999 - $17,995 (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/2005/ducati/999/prices/05/index.html)
2006 999 - $17,995 (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/2006/ducati/999/base/prices/21464/05/index.html)
2007 1098 - $14,995 (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/2007/ducati/1098/prices/05/index.html
2008 1098 - $15,995 (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/2008/ducati/1098/prices/05/index.html)
2011 1198 - $16,495 (http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/2011/ducati/1198/prices/05/index.html)

As per this inflation calculator, and calculated into the latest (2010) available year.

All spare change at the end dropped, not rounded.

'02 998: $21,316
'05 999: $19,916
'06 999: $19,431
'07 1098: $15,750
'08 1098: $16,185
'11 1198: Can't go back in time without my flux capacitor.
