Midpipe to header breakage

Rolling up an unusually sharp driveway today with the GF on the back I managed to give the stock cat a good old scraping which forced the pipes to break loose out of what I can only assume is a press fitting, right before the header on the horizontal cylinder.  I was pretty miffed about the whole thing so I didn't take too good a look at it, but I think it's just a simple disconnection.  No breakage.  I've been meaning to rip the whole system off the bike anyway to replace the flange gaskets (exhaust air leaking all over your legs is great in 95 degree heat) so this shouldn't be a big deal, but I was looking for tips, liquid gasket recommendations, etc.  Do I just run a line of goo around the inner pipe and shove it into the header pipe?  How does it seal, is it a press fit?  Between this and damn near letting the bike tip over in the parking lot, I'm ready to wash off this day.  Thank god for PBR.
We're liberated by the hearts that imprison us.  We're taken hostage by the ones that we break.
