Okay so I called a person today regarding a s4r and asked about the black key, red key and, code card.  He stated that he had a black key, blue key, and red key.  It was my understanding that there should be a code card?  Is this not a correct statement?

JohnnyCanuck

You are correct.  My 04 S4R came with a code card.

Speeddog

+1, yes, it should have the code card.

not sure what the deal is with the 'blue' key, unless he was just smarting off.  :-\

Okay thanks for the responses, does anyone have a picture of this code card, because he could show me anything and say this is the code card?

could he have been referring to the blue plastic sleeve that sometimes comes on brand new spare keys? My spare black key had a blue sleeve before my dog ate it.

Now that you mention it, I remember a blue sleeve.

(Hoping your dog only ate the sleeve, and not the key.  :P)

And yeah, she just ate the other blue sleeve, not the whole key.  ;D

My 2004 S4r came with two black keys and the red key. No key card for me.

I called him back and who ever said that the "blue key" was prob the black key with a blue cover you are correct.  Asked him about the code card, he didnt really know what I was talking about,  I told him it looked like a credit card with a "key" on the front.  He is not the original owner so hopefully the code card made the transaction.  If he has the code card it will be the clincher in the whole deal, if not well I guess move on and find another one.

I wouldn't let the lack of a code card deter you from a nice bike. My 2006 S4R did not come with a code card nor did it come with an owner's manual. You are pretty much OK as long as you have the infamous red key. Seriously, think about it. Ask around... How many people have ever had to use the code card. If you have an faulty start, the red key will get you going and will allow the dealer to get you new keys.

Mystang, this thread (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=11009.0) is about buying a bike without a code card. A good read.

mystang

Okay,  I have done some searching on this board and Googled it, there is conflicting evidence regarding the true purpose and lmitations of the red key.  From my understanding the only time you would ever use the code on the code card is if for some reason all three of your keys get damaged (chip inside of key) or the "antenna" on the bike is not working correctly.  Now if the antenna in the lock is not working correctly you would have to replace this correct? but if you have to replace this you would aslo have to replace everything else also.  I am also getting confilicting reports ont he cost of replacing ecu, dash, etc.  Some say 3000 and then some have exact prices of the parts.  Now my question is if you do have to replace the ecu, dash, keys etc.  Do you get another key card with these items?

Speeddog

Antenna is located in the black plastic 'cover' that surrounds the key lock.
It's a 'dumb' device, has no memory, just an antenna...replace it if it's farked.

Not sure if you get another code card with those new parts, probably not.

Theoretically, the code card allows you to bypass the key/antenna part of the bozomobilizer.
From what I've heard here, success with that is limited, as there can be other stuff wrong as well.

Not that it helps any... but the new SBKs have no red key.
