I hate dump trucks

So on the ride to work today ( a bit cold at 51 degrees) I got behind not one but 2 dump trucks.  One I had to stay behind for about 5 minutes.  I don't wear the face shield on my helmet because I like the wind and I was getting blasted by small rocks.  Glad I had the helmet on (always wear it) because a stone big enough to crack a windshield hit me right in the fore head.  I might have been knocked out and that is bad at 80 mph.

Does anyone else hate dump trucks as much as I do? [moto]

I either get around them -- or stay 500ft back.

I took a rock about the size of my fist to the chest at about 90 once. It took the breath out of me.
I wasn't wearing a jacket. It left a cut in my chest about 4" long and 1/4" deep.

I got to school and it looked like I had been shot. It was great.

Quick question: If you don't wear a visor -- do you wear some sort of eye protection?

Oh yeah I wear Oakleys with shatterproof (or so they say) lenses during the day and clear work glasses at night.  I like the feel of the wind in my face and I also feel like I can hear and see better without the visor.  Still wear a full face helmet and everything just not the visor.

everytime I take a rock (or large bug) to the faceshield I always think to myself  'how the hell do these guys who never wear helmets or open face do it???' That has got to leave a mark!

Yeah large bugs and rocks suck but they are a tradeoff for more of the open feeling I get with the faceshield off.  Most of the time I am alright but two dump trucks in a row really sucked.

I have noticed that most of the time (with some excepctions) the guys who wear those little "grey matter collectors" also have a windshield.  The ones who don't are obviously much more manly than I.  Hell, I got a june bug the size of a hummingbird right smack in the middle of my visor the other night that I could coming 50 yards out.

Regarding your disdain for visors, Metallimonster, I feel the same way, but still keep in on my lid for situations just as these.

I was just thinking after I passed the dump truck that I should head to the old Iron Pony ( a huge motorcyle accesories store in Columbus OH) and pick up a visor.  I want to ride as much as possible and it is getting cold in the mornings.  I also need a pair of cold weather gloves so looks like I'll be spending a benjamin tonight.

How was a dump truck fully loaded able to do 80 mph?
I imagine if you were on the interstate you could have passed, so this was a secondary road?

Was Randell driving it?

I guess that is the speed I normal go.  It was going at least 70 and I was boxed in on all sides on the freeway.

I have a buddy who never wears a helmet.  Idiot!  Anyway, one day he decides to wear it, takes a rock the side of his fist right into his helmet.  Has never worn it since.  Thank goodness the one random day in 1000 he wears his lid, and it's the day it probably saved his life.

Dump trucks suck.  I hate all the dirt in the face.  I'm always glad I have my visor to keep the grit out until I can get past.

Dump trucks does suck! I stay as far away from them when I can, that includes driving a cage.

In the UK there are VERY strict laws against what is termed insecure loads, dump trucks and the like must sheet the load to prevent it from blowing out, as a result all dump trucks have a hydraulicly operated cover. Trucks comming from an offroad environment have to wash their wheels before entering the roads.

Get caught spewing debris on the roads and you are in a world of trouble.
