No, it's real.  "Hell's Angels," Hunter S. Thompson's mandatory reading about his palling around with them during his young days in California, discusses red, brown and black, and earning wings were regular topics in the mag "Easy Riders" stories about rides and parties.

The green and purple were new to me.  (Although I helped recover the body of a dead female mountain climber -- dead 2 years -- once and some of the comments -- like "Who's got some SnoSeal" -- suggest that the subject does come up at least at altitude and after a few weeks in camp.)

I thought the "in" thing now was STI... infection, not disease.

No, the STI is a Subaru, which, much like an STD, wil probably keep one from getting laid.
