Negative battery cable

the negative side of the battery cable (95 m900) came loose and I dun know where the end is supposed to be attached. Is the negative side of the battery cable suppose to just be a ground? or attached to another electrical device?

On my '99 M750, one end attaches to the battery, and the other end the eyelet goes on the bolt that goes through the base of the battery box on the LHS - there's a 10mm nylock nut that runs up the end of the bolt where it extends out the bottom of the battery box mounting bracket (which is why the lhs bolt is longer than the rhs bolt.
