Money is not more important than personal family time.  (I myself have done the opposite)  You don't have to worry about a "bad economy" in the nursing industry (fyi it's GROWING!)  I say let her make the decision.  If she wants to do it.....let her.  If she doesn't, don't make her.  If she can go there for 13 weeks and make 6 months income then come home and continue at her job, that would be a sweet deal.

Did you read it right? Everyone stays except her, same salary, plus all expenses. Sure she's gone 26 weeks, but then she has another 26 weeks of free time, plus weekends, at home!!!!
She might be home, but she would still have to go back to work, if not, she didn't make any more money annually and still lost 26 weeks with husband and kids......

Dude,  no doubt a tough decision. I was laid off in '02 from a job I'd worked at for 5 years. The next month I went to work for twice my regular salary in Houston. I had to commute weekly from Fort Worth to Houston where I had an apartment. It was not easy on a mom with two young kids at home. She and I made the sacrifice but have profited from that decision moreso now because of it. If money is an issue or you would like to have more disposible income to help your family it's a tough decision to make. Once her salary is at where she is going to make it might have a positive effect in the future for a better paying job here in DFW. My sister-in-law is a nurse and she knows that there is a shortage here too and makes damn good money (70-80k+bonuses). Commuting is tough but it doesn make family time that much more valuable when she returns each time. Good luck with the decision.  [thumbsup]

Have her negotiate a few 3 day weekends (with travel covered) to come back and visit.  My buddy got a web design gig in St John, a 6 month project and they flew his ass back to DC every couple of weeks!  Gotta love internet gambling sites!  Might work!

I totally agree with this. Seems like it should be a family thang [thumbsup]

This portion does not compute for me.
Why would she continue at her job here? She would keep her same salary, yet only work 1/2 as much. The other 1/2 would be intense, uninterrupted family/home time. Just because she's "home" now doesn't always mean there's a lot of quality time.

excellent idea! she is on her way now to meet with them and i called her. neither of us had thought of that so thank you very much.

scott is right she would not continue at her job now she would have to quit.and why keep it if your making the same money for half the work. but in order to keep her tx license she would pick up one shift a week with nursefinders otherwise she would fall behind on any changes in this states rules and regs.

Yes sir Mr. Blur, I read it right.  When I said stay, I meant Chris's wife.

I'm all for women getting ahead in their careers but for many reasons if I were Chris, I'd tell my wife she didn't have to go.  Now if this is a prelude to the whole family moving then that's another thing.

I never suggested that. I just think it's a good option, & primarily her choice :)

I never suggested that you suggested what you said you didn't suggest.   ;D

Anyway, this is a very personal thing and not my business.  Just me...

it's not like we would be pickin up the entire family and moving. that WILL NOT be happening. maybe if we were to move to virginia or the caronlinas but not california. i just wanted some other opinions from people whose jobs require alot of travel.

I've spent many many years as a "business" traveller.  I am alone and turned 49 on Monday.  I'll let you do the math, so to speak.

For my job, I've had to be stationed out of town for months at a time.  I recommend doing 3 months at a time, instead of all 6 months at one time. (sounds like that was an option)

Three months is a hassle and not fun, but 6 months (or more) at a time is really tough on both sides of the marriage, especially with the kids.  Kinda sucks for them not to see a parent for that long other than a weekend every now and then.

well she met with them today and they gave her an offer. she countered and we have to wait to see if they agree to it. but if they do she is gonna take it. she would be gone 13 weeks but she would get one three day weekend each month that they pay for 1/2 her round trip flight home each time she comes. the lady told her straight up they can't pay for the full amount but maybe you could ask for 1/2 ;)  ;).   the money is good and the 13 weeks on 13 weeks off schedule leaves alot of family time plus if they agree to the one weekend a month that's not so bad IMO. i told her the biggest difference would be me making dinner and toting karen lyndsey to practice during those weeks. we could get those camera things so she could see the kids when she talks to them. i can record videos and overnight them to her. shane (my son) just kinda gave it a "cool!" karen (my daughter) is ok with it but seems a little hesitant but i think she would be fine in time. she just wanted to know if she could go out there sometime and visit. i told her we could fly her out there on one of the long weekends because i am sure hangin out with older bro and dad is not every girls dream. either way now we wait and see......
