so i called dmv of california 3 months ago, gave them my VIN to check on the status of my title and they said they dont even have any record of it! i quickly called my dealership to ask them whats going on and after about 4 weeks they said that the dmv had lost the paperwork. then they asked me to go down there to re-do the paperwork so they can send it in again, and so i did. its been about a month since (5 months total since i first bought the s4rs) we re-did the paperwork and yesterday i checked with the dmv and sure enough... "im sorry, but we have no record of that motorcycle"

now a few questions: is it possible for the dmv to lose the paperwork... not just once, but twice??? did the dealer do something they're not telling me? maybe they lost the paperwork and blamed it on the dmv? has anyone else ever had to wait this long to receive their title? your help and advice would greatly be appreciated, thanks

It took me about 6 months to get my title on a used bike I bought (through a dealership).  In my case, the problem was the dealer taking their time, the bike had come from out of state, and it was a bit of work for them to get all the paperwork together.

I called weekly, eventually I told them that the bike was not usable without paperwork and if they couldn't get it to me by a certain date, I would expect a full refund as I didn't receive what I paid for.  They got it done. ;)

In your case it's not clear whether the problem is from the dealer or the DMV, obviously each is blaming the other as it is easier for them.
Perhaps you could see if your dealer will let you hand-carry the paperwork from them to the DMV?  That way you can be sure it made it there.

That seems way to long.  I also live in CA and I just bought one used and recieved my title about two weeks after I sent off the paperwork

I bought mine in June, and no registration either.  I called Ace in Concord, my dealer, and they said they had a problem with their system to send info to the DMV for sales from May through August.  So, they had a bunch of delays.  But, they are corrected and I'm hoping to get mine soon.

I just got my title, after about 2 months.

According to my dealer, California DMV has actually "outsourced" the title paperwork to another state.  (how wrong is that?!)  Does this make it more, or less, likely that somewhere it got lost?

But losing it twice?  I doubt it.

Am I correct that you are in CA ?  If you have a temp of some sort is it not expired ?  In WA they are only good for 45 days and then the dealer is required to provide the customer with a WA plate with tabs.  We tend to turn them around in about 2 weeks.  You might want to give customer service a call at Ducati NA and give them your VIN to also check if the sale has been registered with them..  If not, you may have some serious problems that you will need DNA's help with.  Hang on to all of your paperwork including your temp registration.

Just for clarification, a physical title from the State takes from 5-10 weeks depending on new/used, lien payoffs etc..

Dave,

Dealers here give you a temp reg paper. On a car it's taped to the front windshield under a fancy dealer sticker. On the bike I fold it up and put it in my wallet. The temp reg is good for 6 months in CA.

To the OP. I would call the dealer and talk the owner or general manager. I would explain the problem thus far and let them know I would be reporting them to the DMV if they don't take care of the problem. And BTW, if you get stopped by the police those temp reg papers say good for 90 days but it's officially 6 months. Lastly, your bike can get towed away after 6 months with no registration.

Last thought: You sure you are reading the VIN to the DMV correctly? You can PM me it if you want and I can check it for you on Monday.

after calling the sales manager @ the dealer 3 straight days, i finally got a hold of him and he said he's looking into it....

i also called DNA, they said the sale and warranty is registered and that they'll contact the regional sales manager to see whats up

thanks for all the help and suggestions... i just want my title soon so i can ride again!!!
