S2R1k engine head removal - procedure how to do it?

Guys,(hod posted this on the other site - but hoping for some more info on how to go about it - and what to start on first - I will be checking valve clearances and replacing belts at the same time as I do this),

I have 2 questions concerning the removal of the heads and engine cover on my 2006 S2R1k:

1. What's the right procedure? Do I need to put the engine in a special position or be careful of anything in particular? What should I start removing first? Does the tank and airbox need to come out? How do I get the engine cases off - both sides?

2. What gaskets do I need (in particular - do I need head gaskets? - actually - i know I need the metal gaskets - but I wonder if I can use the old ones and maybe add some gasket sealant with them?).

I can see there is sealant around the engine covers, and it seems like there are head gaskets there (there seems to be an aluminium gasket?) - but I'm not sure if I can/should re-use the head gaskets if they are not damaged (which they are not).

Many thanks for any suggestions and help,

G.

PS - the bike's done just on 10,000kms.

California Cycleworks makes a gasket set for the valve covers and engine cases I use on my 2 valve. If you're going to pull the side covers, get the crankcase puller from Desmotimes.com and you may want to invest in some other tools and the book while your at it. His book is the best there is and he has some fantastic tools. If your heads have the 12-point nuts, you'll need a quality 12-point box-end wrench, and have a bend put in it about 2" from the end so you can reach the nuts. After these come off, throw them in the trash and put standard 6-point nuts back on. Saves a lot of headaches. You can also go to TPO for some stainless steel engine bolts and other trick bits while your at it. If you want to power up your system, try Bellissimoto for the custom pistons while you have the heads off. And DON'T re-use the old head gaskets. Just buy new ones and don't risk that they were damaged when you yanked them off. They're too inexpensive to risk engine damage for them. Hope this helps. Good luck on the project.

Why do you want to remove the heads?

The workshop manual details the procedure.

Yep, used mine at least 10 times. Always new sealant.

+1

curious what you are up to? are you splitting the cases or just doing top ends as well as both side covers?

it is easy enough to pull the tank just do it. The airbox will need to come off if the motor is staying in the chassis. You can pull both heads in the chassis as well as both side covers.

Thanks for the inputs guys, I want to strip the paint off them. And the engine side covers.

I've done the basic inspection covers already and it looks a lot better.

It's time for some basic maintenance, so I thought I'd dig a bit deeper and strip that rubbish paint off while I'm at it.

Cheers,

For doing the top ends on a 1000 head pick up the top end gasket kit as it will have most of the gaskets you will need . These models do have head gaskets as well so be sure to replace them.  the kit probably does not have exhaust gaskets so check on those.

Also keep in mind that you do not want to insulate the heads and hold heat in them . For this reason powdercoating is not a good idea , I have been told this from a few ducati race tuners.

make sure you have a tourque wrench that will fit the head nuts for reassembly.

Have fun.... it must be winter time  ... lol
