s4-r or 1098

If you want to prolong your life and also go easier on your wallet then I'd highly recommend you think about one thing. How easy is it to ride the bike I want slowly? It's a very practical question as any high powered bike such as a 1098 is very difficult to ride slowly.

Before the Monster I owned a Honda 600-RR. This bike weighed less than the monster and made 20% more Horsepower and redlined at something like 15,000rpm. It would do 70mph before needing to shift to 2nd gear, and power didn't start coming on strong till about 7,000 rpm. With the Monster I can still have fun with the low down torque before getting to "silly" speeds.

Trust me you'll have a lot more fun riding a Monster in dayt to day life than a 1098.

A lot of people have given you advise so I feel compelled to chip in...

+1 on the S2R. While you may want a bigger bike, the "little 1000" is more than enough for most riding. If you want/need a watercooled or bigger bike, the S4R(s) for sure.

Lunacy on the 1098, unless you track it, I can't imagine it being worth the investment, YMMV. Hell, there should be 848s coming up onto the used scene soon. Maybe hold out for one of them?

since i am a newb, i am taking everyones advice to heart.  since only advice on the 1098 was to take it easy i think im going to have to go with the monster.  unfortuantly i really dont care for the new monster, i am partial to the (whole) trellis frame.  with that it seems like a lot of people on here dont like the clutered look of the s4-r, but i have to say that is really the main reason i like it, just that much more to mod up.  so i guess im going to be looking for an s4-r, i would like as new as possible with minimal miles, what is the difference between the years?  oh and thanks to all those who responded

I was thinking the other day about what my next bike will be.  I definitely wanted better components, handling, braking, and power but I didnt want a soul-less sportbike like a CBR, R6, or GSX.  So I started thinking... hmm used 848 (1098 is just too much for me financially).

Ironically, while pulling up to the motorcycle lot on campus, i unknowingly parked next to a red 848.  I didnt realize it was an 848 until i started taking my gloves and helmet off.  Dont get me wrong, its a gorgeous bike, but i realized that although its a sexy bike, it kinda blends in with the sea of soul-less sportbikes.  Thats when it struck me...

The styling of the S*R monsters is just emotion provoking.  There is just something cool about how everything is exposed and just how raw the bike looks.  I seriously walk up to my bike everyday with a huge grin on my face.  In that same moment, i realized that my next bike will have to be a monster...

Hopefully in a couple years I will be able to pick up a white/red S4Rs like this one:
(its actually a pic of devilisht2003's bike)

Words cannot describe how hot that bike is.

the gold rims look realy good.   try BSTs...could have DP paint the spokes gold...that would be perfect.

Hey Statler -

So, there were a pair of naked BST rims on the parts counter at the bike shop this past Saturday when I popped in for a visit.

I didn't think ahead, so I grabbed one with 2 hands so I could pick it up with enough "strength".

Yes, I nearly hurled myself backwards holy shit! [laugh]

Good lord, those things are light!  They weigh about as much as much as an African swallow (without the coconuts) . . .

Now I understand BST-lust better.  I can only imagine how they transform the bike.

(Sorry for the thread jack).

The 1098 has a "Claimed" output of 160hp by Ducati and the S4RS has a "Claimed" 130 hp @ 9500 rpm (same deep dump engine as 999/999s) - rated at 150 hp w/performance exhaust.

The S4RS is more than enough bike. I can keep up with the Jap bikes on my RS anytime.  Besides, like someone here said, you'll have more fun moding the bike over a 1098. I find full fairing bikes cool looking, but only for a minute. Go for the S4R friend. I never get tired of looking at my bike.

Icon, that's a mean looking monster you got there!!! Like it a lot ;-)

I own a 1098 and its simple you have had 4months of riding experience.  You are straight up not ready for a 1098, it still scares the pants off of me and i have had it for 6months now and 6200miles.  And i have been riding dirtbikes since i was 13 and motorcycles since i got my license at 17.  Get the monster you will not be dissapointed and you will have plenty of power/torque etc.

However if what you want is a sport bike, which in my case is what i was after, i would find a used 848.  In my mind i know a monster is not going to be a sportbike no matter what modding i do to it it is still a monster.  If you purchase the monster and find yourself modding it to make it more into a sportbike you might want to reevaluate keeping the monster.  But for everything else a monster is amazing and from what i hear they are still a blast on the track thanks to all that torque!
